{"id":435681,"date":"2020-06-13T18:34:12","date_gmt":"2020-06-14T01:34:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=435681"},"modified":"2020-06-13T18:34:12","modified_gmt":"2020-06-14T01:34:12","slug":"olympic-champ-nelson-diebel-hired-as-head-coach-of-delaware-swim-team","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/olympic-champ-nelson-diebel-hired-as-head-coach-of-delaware-swim-team\/","title":{"rendered":"Olympic Champ Nelson Diebel Hired as Head Coach of Delaware Swim Team"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Delaware Swim Team <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teamunify.com\/NewsShow.jsp?&amp;id=703943&amp;team=madst\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">on Friday announced the hiring<\/a> of Olympic gold medalist <strong>Nelson Diebel<\/strong> as its head coach.<\/p>\n<p>Diebel won gold in the 100 breaststroke (setting an Olympic record) and 400 medley relay (in a world record) at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/morning-swim-show-olympic-gold-medalist-nelson-diebel-relives-barcelona-92-olympics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">1992 Olympics in Barcelona<\/a>. Diebel\u2019s swimming track record includes silver medals in the 200 breast at the 1989 Pan Pacific Championships and the 1991 Pan American Games.<\/p>\n<p>A native of Illinois, Diebel attended Peddie School in New Jersey, where his 100 breaststroke record at the Eastern Interscholastic Swimming Championships held <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/reece-whitley-discusses-100-breast-record-swim-easterns-video\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">until it was broken by<\/a> <strong>Reece Whitley<\/strong> in 2015. Diebel excelled at Princeton University, where he still holds one of the program\u2019s top-10 times in the 200 breast through the 2019-20 campaign.<\/p>\n<p>Diebel has coached for more than 20 years at various swim teams and clinics. Most recently, he\u2019s been on the business side of the swimming industry, managing relationships with swimmers for Nike Swim and as the director of marketing for Arena.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can&#8217;t explain how exciting it is to develop young athletes,\u201d Nelson Diebel said in a team statement. \u201cIt is a rare thing to find yourself in a position to do a job you love while surrounded by a dependable support team. When such an opportunity comes along, it&#8217;s impossible to turn down. I\u2019m looking forward to the challenge and satisfaction of once again developing young athletes to excel in and out of the pool.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNelson is a tremendous addition to the Delaware Swim Team,\u201d DST founder and original team coach <strong>Mike Ramone<\/strong> said in a team statement. \u201cWith his world class competitive standing, and his long record of coaching superior swimmers, we are thrilled that Nelson has joined us. We know our swimmers will gain so much, from not only his expertise in the water, but also from his understanding of swimmers as athletes who require a holistic coaching approach.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DST rose to national prominence under <strong>Bruce Gemmell,<\/strong> who in 2012 left to coach with Nation\u2019s Capital Aquatic Club. <strong>Sean Dougherty<\/strong> was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/sean-dougherty-promoted-to-replace-bruce-gemmell-at-delaware-swim-team\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">promoted to head coach then<\/a> and served in that capacity until 2015.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Delaware Swim Team on Friday announced the hiring of Olympic gold medalist Nelson Diebel as its head coach.
