Cancun, Mexico.- Nearly 250 athletes from 23 countries
\nwill race the 5th ITU World Aquathlon Championships on
\nSunday, starting a multisports festival which will
\nreach its climax next week with the ITU World
\nTriathlon Championships.
\n Langosta Beach will be the witness of a very
\ncompetitive race, consisting of a 2.5km run, 1km swim
\nand another 2.5km run.
\n In a press conference held at Plaza Caracol,
\nMexican Triathlon Federation President Jaime Cadaval
\nthanked the government of Cancun and the state of
\nQuintana Roo for their support, as well as the
\nInternational Triathlon Union (ITU) for trusting the
\norganization to Mexico.
\n "The aquathlon will give us an idea of how the
\ncompetition will be next week with the triathlon",
\nsaid Cavadal.
\n Event director Luis Galvez explained all details
\nof the race, due to start at 8.00 for age-groupers and
\nan hour and a half later for the elite, junior and
\nunder-23 year old athetes.
\n With defending champions, Spain's Ivan Rana and
\nUSA's Siri Lindley absent this year, athletes from
\nEurope, South America and Canada have greater chances
\nof winning.
\n Brazil will be represented by Paulo Miyashiro,
\nthird in 2002, current Pan American champion Leandro
\nMacedo, Juracy Moreira and Sydney Olympics eleventh
\nplace finisher Sandra Soldan.
\n Other strong contenders are Argentina's 2001 Pan
\nAmerican champion Daniel Fontana,
\nCanada's Shane Armstrong, Gillian Moody and Jill
\nSavege, Ukraine\u00b4s 1997 world junior champion Andrey
\nGlushchenko and Hungary's Szabolcs Agoston and Csaba
\nKuttor.
\n Savege is currently placed fifth in the ITU World
\nRankings and Kuttor took part in the last two editions
\nof the aquathlon worlds: fifth in Cancun'2000 y
\nseventh in Edmonton'2001.
\n The host country will be represented by 1997 Pan
\nAmerican champion Eligio Cervantes, Bruno Arochi,
\nRodrigo Quevedo y Esther Aguayo.
\n The Aquathlon Worlds started in Noosa, Australia,
\nin November 1998 and will mark the beginning of a
\n10-day multisport festival, which will end with the
\nTriathlon Worlds November 9-10.
\n Cancun already hosted the World triathlon and
\nduathlon champs in 1995, and the 2000 aquathlon
\nchamps.
