The reopening applies to both public and private clubs.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">NEW: Municipal and private-club swimming pools can REOPEN on Monday, June 22nd. ?<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NJDeptofHealth?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@NJDeptofHealth<\/a> will release full guidance tomorrow relating to the procedures and protocols that will need to be followed. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/beVB3PnOZV\">pic.twitter.com\/beVB3PnOZV<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Governor Phil Murphy (@GovMurphy) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GovMurphy\/status\/1270034452975095813?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 8, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can today give everybody that day to look forward to, June 22,\u201d Murphy said at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=lZh7hjw2Dm8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">his daily press briefing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The state has been a contentious battleground for pool reopening. The Garden State was one of the most impacted by the pandemic, but it has been in a multi-week reduction of cases. That has led <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/new-jerseys-jerry-zheng-sums-up-the-feelings-of-swimmers-on-dry-land-dreaming-of-the-water\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">some to petition the governor to include pool opening<\/a> in an earlier phase of the state\u2019s recovery plan.<\/p>\n<p>New Jersey has seen 164,000 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/coronavirus\/2020\/06\/nj-coronavirus-death-toll-increases-to-12214-with-164497-total-cases-stage-2-of-reopening-1-week-away.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cases of COVID-19<\/a>, including 12,214 deaths. It reported 356 new cases Monday, though its rate of transmission is slowing.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere, <strong>Massachusetts<\/strong> enters <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wwlp.com\/news\/health\/coronavirus-local-impact\/massachusetts-begins-phase-2-of-governor-bakers-re-opening-plan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Phase 2 of its plan Monday<\/a>, which permits opening of \u201coutdoor recreational facilities (pools, playgrounds, spray decks, mini golf, go karts, batting cages, climbing walls).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Monday marks <strong>Michigan\u2019s<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freep.com\/story\/news\/local\/michigan\/2020\/06\/08\/michigan-bars-restaurants-swimming-pools-reopening-covid\/3170115001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">first day with pools open<\/a>. It applies only to outdoor pools but includes public and private facilities.<\/p>\n<p>The trajectory of pool reopenings has reached a hyperlocal level in many areas. Monday marked announcements of reopening plans on the city level in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.miamigov.com\/Government\/Reopening-Miami\/Public-Pools-Reopening\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Miami<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wlwt.com\/article\/7-cincinnati-public-pools-reopen-monday-reservations-needed\/32798665#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cincinnati<\/a> (which opened seven public pools and requires reservations); <a href=\"https:\/\/www.staradvertiser.com\/2020\/06\/08\/hawaii-news\/city-pools-begin-reopening-with-team-sports-to-follow-june-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Honolulu<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hometownlife.com\/story\/news\/local\/birmingham\/2020\/06\/08\/birmingham-updates-residents-midst-covid-19\/3134624001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Birmingham, Alabama<\/a> (outdoor pools only); and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.krqe.com\/always-on\/public-pools-to-reopen-this-week\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Albuquerque, New Mexico<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Swimming Through a Pandemic<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><em>The postponements and cancellations wrought by COVID-19 haven\u2019t just affected the Olympics and the ranks of elite swimmers.
