In a tight economic climate, there are growing fears that jobs could be lost when the money starts to run out.<\/p>\n<p>Staff have been placed on reduced hours and pay, Russell confirmed, with a warning that more tough decisions about cost-cutting were likely. She told <em>Julian Linden of\u00a0The Sunday Mail:<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe haven\u2019t had to lay people off yet but like every other sport, the next financial year looks ominous so we\u2019re making some really prudent financial choices to make sure that we can keep our team of staff together as much as possible.\u00a0The challenge for us is we\u2019ve got the Olympics and we don\u2019t want to compromise our performance and to do that, we\u2019ve got to have a number of things behind the scenes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a delicate balancing act so we\u2019re trying to do our modelling for the next financial year from pretty optimistic to \u2018this is Armageddon\u2019.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Some Swimming Australia Shelved<\/p>\n<p>The high-performance funding of Australia\u2019s elite swimmers has been ring-fenced on the way to the Tokyo Games. Many other spending Swimming Australia plans have been put on hold, including a\u00a0global recruitment search for a new national head coach after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/a-dream-job-and-a-legacy-built-a-look-at-the-jacco-verhaeren-era-of-aussie-swimming\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dutchman <strong>Jacco Verhaeren<\/strong> announced he was returning to Europe<\/a> in September.<\/p>\n<p>As our <em>Oceania Correspondent Ian Hanson<\/em> reported in the past week, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/breaking-news-rohan-taylor-appointed-as-new-dolphins-head-coach-as-jacco-verhaeren-departs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Victoria\u2019s<strong> Rohan Taylor<\/strong><\/a>, one of Verhaeren&#8217;s leading assistants, has been appointed as interim head coach through to Tokyo.<\/p>\n<p>What happens beyond that to Swimming Australia and other sports organisations will largely depend on the course of the pandemic and the long-term economic, social and political impact of events unforeseen at the turn of the year.<\/p>\n<p>Russell, who has presided over the turmoil of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/sun-yang-appeal-has-slim-chance-of-success-says-fina-legal-eagle-as-china-debates-swimmers-18000-a-month-wage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sun Yang controversy<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/mack-horton-must-lose-his-medal-was-call-of-fina-bosses-after-podium-protest-against-sun-yang\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Mack Horton<\/strong><\/a> played a key role in, and the ongoing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/judgement-day-looming-for-banned-aussie-swim-star-shayna-jack\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">doping case of Shayna Jack<\/a>. For the Swimming Australia boss those events and others have been part of a learning curve that will help make the future brighter.
