THE University of Tennessee women&#39;s swimming and diving team improved its dual-meet record to 2-0 with a 127-114 victory over SEC rival Louisiana State on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>The meet came down to the final event, the 400y free relay, as Lady Vol senior Bethany Hall (Knoxville, Tenn.) touched the wall in 3:31.70, nearly four seconds ahead of the LSU team to clinch the win for Tennessee. Senior Sara Wingfield (Fort Pierce, Fla.), junior Taryn Ternent (Edenvale, South Africa) and freshman Abbi Terveer (Lima, Ohio), along with Hall, combined on the victorious relay.<\/p>\n<p>Hall also recorded a key win for UT in the 200y free, clocking a time of 1:53.17. Just behind Hall was fellow Lady Vol, freshman Noelle Bassi (Franklin Lakes, N.J.), who placed second with a 1:54.06.<\/p>\n<p>In the 200y fly, Bassi was triumphant for the second-consecutive week, winning by a margin of nearly two and a half seconds with time of 2:03.05. Bassi had already recorded an NCAA provisional qualifying time in the event at the Lady Vols&#39; first meet of the season against Kentucky.<\/p>\n<p>Freshman Betsy Brockman (Batavia, Ohio) also had a big day for Tennessee, winning the 400y IM with a clocking of 4:28.01. Brockman also scored points for UT with a third-place finish in the 200y breast and a fourth-place finish in the 200y fly.<\/p>\n<p>Also bringing home individual event wins for the Lady Vols were Ternent and freshman Jacque Fessel (Cincinnati, Ohio). Ternent won the 50y free with a time of 24.38 and placed fourth in the 100y free (53.68). Fessel, meanwhile, claimed victory in the 200y back with a time of 2:02.79.<\/p>\n<p>Sophomore Lauryn McCalley (Moultrie, Ga.) starred in the diving events for Tennessee. McCalley placed first in the one-meter springboard with a score of 269.70 and second in the three-meter with a total 295.13.<\/p>\n<p>Other Lady Vol scorers included Terveer in the 50y free (third), Wingfield in the 100y free (fifth), freshman Kara Boland in the 500y free (second) and 1000y free (second), senior Raellen Arnold in the 500y free (fourth) and 100y free (third), freshman Randi Vogel in the 200y back (third), freshman Amy Roberts in the 200y back (fifth) and 400y IM (fourth), freshman Danielle Lundy in the 200y breast (fourth), senior Nicole Brannock in the 200y breast (fifth), freshman Graciela Breece-Rodriguez in the 200y fly (third), junior Kristin Souppa in the 400y IM (fifth), junior Kylee Wells in the one-meter (third) and three-meter springboard (third) and freshman Heather Chapman in the one-meter (fourth) and three-meter springboard (fourth).<\/p>\n<p>Stephanie Smith was a double winner fort LSU, taking the two distance events: the 500 free in 4:55.42 and the 1000 in 9:57.11. <\/p>\n<p>Julie Johnson, a senior, led a 1-2-3 LSU sweep in the 100 free with a 53.25 second effort.<\/p>\n<p>Senior Cissy Schepens took the 200 breast for LSU with a solid 2:18.96, while teammate Jill Thomas was runner-up, three seconds back.<\/p>\n<p>LSU also out-touched Tennessee in the 400 medley relay, clocking 3:50.78.<\/p>\n<p>LSU freshman Jessica Wantz took the 3-meter diving with the Vols&#39; Lauryn McCalley second, reversing the order of finish on the 1-meter.<\/p>\n<p>With the win, Tennessee improves its all-time record against LSU to 5-1.<\/p>\n<p>Next week, the Lady Vols will help kick off homecoming festivities in Knoxville when they return to the water on Friday, Nov. 8. The swim team will be in action in a dual meet against No. 19 Miami, while the diving squad will host the UT Diving Invitational. The diving invite field will be extremely talented as Houston, Miami and Ohio State all visit Rocky Top. Among the notable competitors at the invite will be NCAA Champion and Olympic gold medallist Yulia Pakhalina of Houston.
