Stott

In the first of two parts, Swimming World Magazine re-examines the role of volume in swim training.

Long ago—and in a time that seems far away—volume, in America at least, held a biblical status espoused by disciples Mark Schubert, Richard Shoulberg and Gregg Troy. Refugees from Mission Viejo’s “Animal Lane,” Germantown as well as The Bolles School and the University of Florida populated Olympic rosters and brought home national and international medals made of gold, silver and bronze.

Today, volume still has a place in swim training.

“Done correctly at a low, low heart-rate level, volume is really important,” says Troy. “It teaches great muscle memory. Doing the same incorrectly creates bad muscle memory. You want to repeat good habits. It is not about how much volume, but how quick the volume is.”

In a word: intensity.

“When swim training is done correctly and repeatedly, athletes can improve,” he says. “For some athletes, correct might mean 80,000 a week because their bodies can handle it. For others, it might be only 20 to 30,000 because that is all they can do correctly.

“And correct isn’t always fast. It can be technically correct; it can be working on a different part of the body that gets fatigued. It can be all different kinds of things,” says Troy.

Jack Roach’s understanding of aerobic overload has been instructive and evolutionary. A triathlete and high school, club and college coach, Roach worked with Schubert at Mission Bay and followed him to the University of Texas before departing for the La Loma Centro Deportivo in Mexico, where he was head coach and aquatics director.

South of the border, he coached the Mexican national team and hosted top international teams and swimmers before becoming director of USA Swimming’s national junior team. These days, he is director of coach and athlete development at TIDE Swimming in Virginia Beach, Va.

Legendary for his ability to connect with athletes, Roach has continually asked, “What is the place of the aerobic component in my training program?”

To access Jack Roach’s full outlook on volume training,
Check out the May/June 2020 issue of Swimming World Magazine, available now!

Get Swimming World Magazine and Swimming World Biweekly FREE When You
Become A Member of the International Swimming Hall of Fame

Want More?
