{"id":434183,"date":"2020-06-02T14:24:29","date_gmt":"2020-06-02T21:24:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=434183"},"modified":"2020-06-02T15:10:03","modified_gmt":"2020-06-02T22:10:03","slug":"usopc-ceo-sarah-hirshland-to-athletes-united-we-stand-on-social-justice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/usopc-ceo-sarah-hirshland-to-athletes-united-we-stand-on-social-justice\/","title":{"rendered":"USOPC CEO Sarah Hirshland to Athletes: \u201cUnited We Stand\u201d on Social Justice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee CEO <strong>Sarah Hirshland<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teamusa.org\/News\/2020\/June\/02\/USOPC-CEO-Sarah-Hirshlands-Letter-To-Team-USA-Athletes-On-Social-Justice\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">published a letter to athletes Tuesday<\/a> in response to recent protests over social injustice and police brutality.<\/p>\n<p>The letter comes in response to days of protests in many American cities, sparked by last week\u2019s killing of <strong>George Floyd,<\/strong> an unarmed black man, in custody of the Minneapolis police department. Hirshland\u2019s letter follows many other professional sports teams and organizations broadcasting their positions.<\/p>\n<p>Hirshland emphasizes the diversity of \u201crace, gender, geography and perspective\u201d that USOPC athletes represent. The letter announces an athlete town hall Friday for athletes to \u201copenly discuss how you have been impacted personally, listen to each other, learn from each other, and support each other.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She writes:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cWe absolutely condemn the systemic inequality that disproportionately impacts Black Americans in the United States. It has no place in ours or any other community. It is clear there are no forces as ugly, damaging and demeaning as racism and marginalization practiced by some of those in positions of authority. It played out in Minneapolis in the most tragic and unconscionable way imaginable. It is being felt intensely across the United States day after day.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The USOPC doesn\u2019t have the most steadfast record on athlete protests, even in recent times. Fencer <strong>Race Imboden<\/strong> and hammer thrower <strong>Gwen Berry<\/strong> were each reprimanded and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/2019\/08\/21\/us-fencer-race-imboden-given-month-probation-pan-am-games-protest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">placed on a 12-month probation<\/a> after medal-stand protests at last summer\u2019s Pan American Games. Imbolden took a knee on the podium as the American men were awarded the gold medal in the team foil competition. Berry <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/olympics\/trackandfield\/story\/_\/id\/27721192\/gwen-berry-american-hammer-thrower-regret-anthem-protest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">raised a fist and bowed her head<\/a> for a portion of \u201cThe Star-Spangled Banner\u201d on the podium.<\/p>\n<p>Many athletes have participated in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/swimmers-show-solidarity-with-blackouttuesday-social-media-posts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">#blackoutTuesday on social media<\/a> and have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/cullen-jones-justice-is-action-but-through-peace-lia-neal-olivia-smoliga-deliver-powerful-messages\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">used their voices<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/sorry-simone-manuel-your-voice-on-usa-troubled-times-heard-by-swimming-world\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">chime in on the protests<\/a>. That group <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/simone-manuel-katie-ledecky-and-natalie-hinds-speak-up-on-george-floyd-tragedy-lets-listen-engage-and-build\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">includes prominent swimmers<\/a> like <strong>Cullen Jones, Lia Neal, Simone Manuel, Natalie Hinds<\/strong> and others.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah Hirshland\u2019s letter concludes:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cWe can see that apathy and indifference are not solutions.\u00a0 The USOPC stands with those who demand equality and we want to work in pursuit of that goal. We must do everything in our power to ensure equality promised is equality achieved. We are committed to providing opportunities for our community to engage, to learn, and connect to resources for them to become advocates and take action.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe\u2019ve long celebrated the great power of sport as a way to unify nations and people in conflict.
