AUSTIN, Texas, November 2. THE University of Texas men and women's swimming and diving teams swept the University of Southern California on Saturday afternoon at the Lee and Joe Jamial Texas Swim Center.<\/p>\n
The No. 1-ranked men's team, which has captured the last three National Championships, upended the No. 5 Trojans 208-143, and the women squeaked by the No. 8 USC by a one-point margin, 177-176. <\/p>\n
In the tri-meet, the men's squad added a 202-138 win over No. 17 Texas A&M, while the women's team dropped a 184-169 decision to No. 2 Stanford. <\/p>\n
The Texas men's team now owns a 2-0 record on the year and the women stand at 2-1.<\/p>\n
The Longhorns' women's team pulled out a win over USC in dramatic fashion, placing first and second in the final event of the day, the 400-yard freestyle relay. Senior All-American Tanica Jamison (Dublin, Calif.), junior Lacey Elliott (El Paso, Texas) and sophomores Michelle Molina (Paradise Valley, Ariz.) and Sara Wanezek (Brookfield, Wisc.)teamed together for the top time in the event at 3:24.57. Following closely behind was Texas' 'B' team consisting of freshmen Kristy Siminski (Portage, Ind.) and Elizabeth Wycliffe (Onatrio, Canada), junior Jenna Bridges (Tallahassee, Fla.) and senior All-American Joscelin Yeo (Republic of Singapore). <\/p>\n
By capturing the top two spots in the 400-yard freestyle relay, Texas was able to complete a comeback that saw them down to USC by a score of 92-75 after the first day of competition.<\/p>\n
"We knew going into the last race that we had to capture first and second place," co-head coach Mike Walker said. "I'm really pleased with how our team performed, especially considering how far we were down yesterday. That is a testament to our upperclassmen's
\nleadership and our underclassmen's enthuisasm."<\/p>\n
The women's team began their comeback with the first race of the day, the 200-yard medley relay. Wycliffe, Wanezek, Elliott and sophomore Kaela Humphries (Chaska, Minn.) joined togehter for the victorious time of 1:42.60. Wanezek would later add the top times in the 100-yard backstroke (55.38) and the 50-yard freestyle (23.29) to help put Texas in position to win the meet.<\/p>\n
On the men's side, Texas opened day two of competition with a triumph in the 200-yard medley relay. All- Americans Brendan Hansen (Haverford, Pa.), Ian Crocker (Portland, Maine) and Chris Kemp (Southlake, Texas) teamed with freshman John Patterson (Houston, Texas) to touch the wall in first place with a time of 1:29.68.<\/p>\n
Kemp went on to win the 200-yard freestyle (1:37.22),
\nwhile sophomore Rainer Kendrick (Birmingham, Ala.) and freshman Aaron Peirsol (Irvine, Calif.) added the top times in the 200-yard butterfly and the 100-yard backstroke, respectively, with marks of 1:47.32 and 48.82.<\/p>\n
The Texas men's team will resume competition when it hosts Michigan at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swim Center on Friday, Nov. 22 at 6 p.m, while the women are slated to compete against Rice in Houston on Saturday, Nov. 23 at a time yet to be determined.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
