I Men: Michigan Upsets Floreida, 132-109

GAINESVILLE, FLORIDA, November 1. THE Florida Gators' men's team was on a roll.

UF had handily defeated Southeast Conference foe Louisiana State, intra-state "rival" Indian River Community College and Big 10 power Penn State in consecutive dual meets to open the 2002-'03 season, and looked ready to challenge the Texas and Stanfords of the swimming world for collegiate supremacy.

Did somebody say, "Break up the Gators?"

Well, that's exactly what Coach Jon Urbancek's Michigan Wolverines were undoubtedly thinking as they splashed to a solid 132-109 victory over the Gators here this evening at the latter's Stephen C. O'Connell Center Natatorium.

Michigan won seven of nine individual swimming events en route to victory and recorded sweeps in the 1000 yard freestyle (going 1-3), and also went 1-2 in the 200-500 frees, 200 fly and 200 IM.

Sophomore diver Zach Wilcox was Florida's big scorer, taking victories on the 1- and 3-meter boards. He broke the Florida record on the 1-meter with his 366.97 point total. The old mark of 345.75 was held by David West. It was the second time this season Wilcox has broken the Florieda record, having also done so int he Gators' wiin over IRCC last month.

Michigan was led by freshman Peter Vanderkaay, who
"cruised" to a pair of impressive victories in the 500 free (4:26.23) with teammate Andrew Hurd — a Canadian Olympian — close behind (4:27.39); and also the 1000 free (9:02.00) with Hurd again second (9:07.95) and Wolverine Brendan Nelligan third (9:08.30).

Perhaps the evening's most-anticipated race was in the 200 free where Florida's defending NCAA champ, Adam Sioui, was matched against Michigan Big 10 champ Dan Ketchum, whose 1:34.19 from last year's conference meet is the Wolverine record.

(Ketchum's time was also fastest nationally last season as Sioui won NCAAs in 1:34.67.)

Perhaps still smarting from his defeat at NCAAs, where he was runner-up to his Gator foe, Ketchum raced to a nation-leading 1:37.88 victory with freshman teammate Davis Tarwater second (1:38.03). Sioui was sixth (1:42.51).

Tarwater, a highly talented and heavily recruited Tennessee native, was the nation's leading prep 100 flyer last season with his state-record 48.00 for Chattanooga's Webb School at the state championship meet. Following the 200 free, Tarwater won the 200 fly here (1:48.94).

Michigan needs a solid sprinter-flyer and Tarwater could be the answer to Urbancek's most fervent prayers come NCAAs next March in Austin.

Other Michigan winners included Canadian national team member Chuck Sayao in the 200 individual medley (1:51.65 to teammate Tony Kirth's 1:51.69); and freshman Chris DeJong in the 200 back (pr 1:45.65) with Florida's defending SEC champ Chris Kellam next (1:46.11); and sprinter Garrett Mangieri in the 100 free (44.74).

Florida's Gabe Mangabeira scored a win in the 50 free (20.66) with teammate Carlos Jayme next (20.75); and Gator Ian Chadsey won the 200 breast (2:01.24) with Michigan's Jeff Hopwood (2:03.00) runner-up.

Florida's relays won impressively, with the 400 medley squad clocking a nation-leading 3:17.94 to Michigan's 3:18.11; and the 400 sprint squad coming home in 2:59.86.

DeJong had the fastest 100 back leadoff (49.40), and also led off in the 400 free relay with a 45.46. Fastest leadoff in this latter race was Jayme's 44.42.

Minnesota has won the Big 10 the last two seasons after Michigan dominated throughout the '90s. Off this evening's showing the Wolverines may well change that come the title-meet next February.

— Bill Bell

The Gators made it a sweep in the relays, as the team of Chris Kellam (Mt. Juliet, Tenn.) Ian Chadsey (Reston, Va.), Gabriel Mangabeira (Piratininga, Brazil) and Carlos Jayme (Goias, Brazil) won the 400-yard medley relay in a time of 3:17.94 The 400-yard freestyle team of Jayme, Ryan Lochte (Daytona Beach, Fla.), Kris Wiebeck (Tampa, Fla.) and Adam Sioui (Ontario, Canada) won the event with a top time of 2:59.86.

Mangabeira and Chadsey also were victorious in individual action. Mangabeira won the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 20.66. Teammates Jayme, and Nick Borreca (Honolulu, Hi.) finished second and third respectively — Jayme in 20.75 and Borreca in 21.53. Chadsey kept the streak of top times in the 200-yard breaststroke going at three, with his time of 2:01.24.

Florida will be back in action Friday, Nov. 15, as the Gators host Southeastern Conference foe South Carolina at the O'Connell Center at 4 p.m.

NCAA DIVISION 1 MEN'S SWIMMING & DIVING MEET

MICHIGAN vs FLORIDA

O'CONNELL CENTER NATATORIUM

GAINESVILLE, FL., NOVEMBER 1

25 Yd.
