He founded the Tualatin Hills Swim Club in Beaverton, Oregon, where the Harman Swim Center <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thprd.org\/facilities\/aquatics\/harman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">is named in his honor<\/a>. He was named National High School Swim Coach of the Year twice and <a href=\"https:\/\/pamplinmedia.com\/bvt\/18-sports\/112743-harman-celebrates-another-milestone\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in 2012 was inducted<\/a> to the National High School Hall of Fame. Harman earned the Game Changer Award in 2012 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jesuitportland.org\/uploaded\/News_Files\/BEAVERTON_Oregon_Sports_Awards_Winners_Announced.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">at the Oregon Sports Awards<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Harman began coaching at Beaverton High School in 1959 and coached through 1993, followed by a stint at Aloha High. He spent more than three decades teaching social studies and economics at Beaverton High. In addition to swimming, he also coached football, water polo, wrestling, track and cheerleading among other sports. His accolades include eight state championships and 10 runner-up finishes in swimming and two boys water polo state titles.<\/p>\n<p>Among <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/tough-girl-brings-carolyn-woods-swimming-heroics-life-to-new-light\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">his star pupils<\/a> was 1960 Olympic gold medalist <strong>Carolyn Wood,<\/strong> who posted on Facebook Sunday that, \u201cCoach Rod Harman died yesterday on his way to his daily \u2018hike.\u2019 He never lost his passion for kids and coaching.\u201d Beaverton School <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/BeavertonHigh\/?eid=ARDaTE3GIhXT2E2EGmUEWqfAlFbJdR1oQqnM-msRbUE3fyFd5m-IIStX7JTxqyj5eYqZCTODQE8jM3vG&amp;hc_ref=ARSGVzG-0Dip3waBv1GMlblTcCh1BGBdrZDGb0CnqIpcKB9WiOtAxF0gmFA6IXJzfwg&amp;fref=nf&amp;__xts__[0]=68.ARD91-PXujofMxUgOxngohssf8Y45U9g5REdhOD6Wq310ZgegF_IZG3BQbTHyRWB2_S2JYqy9nNLOYKAHvEjv0Eq4MyeMDsI-LpYsLdHMH7uCj1f-k9BUgkw8nNWye6IJaTEJVcV6bEC-d1rs5Sz0mgnuK_-nIFvj1lgalUaQLHP4nqk0L8Aas8vEyig1272eL-4JpDKJDMdTjWFDa8sQZ8e9363rLlwHGN3dV-bVmEcBYx1whvP3S3ys0r94Kple6VOtJS1Eiqp66IRtODfMJqcHszOfLc25bt-lZFSb_DamNJAKZ3JDuHOOoMys8xclh3e5rW0N0YMyYzP0cGD2NCwkQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">also shared a remembrance of Harman<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Harman\u2019s sons, Scott and Mark, hope to start a scholarship fund in their father\u2019s name.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was the epitome of a role model,\u201d <strong>Scott Harman<\/strong> told the <em>Oregonian<\/em>. \u201cHe changed lives in a good way, from helping his students understand compound growth to strengthening athletes. He was a rock star.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harman went into cardiac arrest while driving less than a mile from his home. A medical report indicated that as the cause of a car accident.<\/p>\n<p>Harman was born in Iowa in 1927 and learned to swim in the Iowa River. He moved to Hillsboro, Oregon, with his family in 1942 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy before the end of the World War II, then again during the Korean War.
