St Peters Western (Brisbane, Qld) Head Coach Dean Boxall<\/strong> has joined a \u201cwho\u2019s who\u201d of Australia\u2019s legendary list of swim coaches after being named the 2019 Australian Swimming Coaches And Teachers Association (ASCTA) prestigious Coach of the Year today.<\/p>\n

Boxall won the award for his efforts with Ariarne Titmus, Clyde Lewis<\/strong> and Mitch Larkin<\/strong> at last year\u2019s Fina World Championships in Gwangju, South Korea.<\/p>\n

Titmus was Australia\u2019s sole individual gold medallist at the Championships, defeating legendary five-time Olympic gold medallist US and the world\u2019s greatest ever distance freestyler, Katie Ledecky<\/strong> in an epic 400m freestyle \u2013 over-taking Ledecky on the final lap.<\/p>\n

While Lewis was a member of Australia\u2019s gold medal winning 4x200m freestyle relay and also becoming Australia\u2019s second fastest ever 200m freestyler behind Ian Thorpe<\/strong> while Larkin swam his way back on to the World Championship podium, winning bronze in the 100m backstroke after a stellar Commonwealth Games in 2018.<\/p>\n

He won the award from Australia\u2019s impressive list of coaching achievers at last year\u2019s World Championships in Gwangju \u2013 Craig Jackson<\/strong> (for Mack Horton<\/strong>), Michael Bohl <\/strong>(for Emma McKeon<\/strong>), Richard Scarce <\/strong>(for Alex Graham<\/strong>), Mick Palfrey<\/strong> (for Brianna Throssell<\/strong>), Simon Cusack<\/strong> (for Cate Campbell and Bronte Campbell<\/strong>), Peter Bishop<\/strong> (for Kyle Chalmer<\/strong>s) and Adam Kable<\/strong> (for Matt Wilson).<\/strong><\/p>\n

And Boxall joins the likes of coaches\u00a0John Carew, Doug Frost, Denis Cotterell, Ian Pope, John Fowlie, Bill Nelson, Michael Bohl, Scott Volkers, Stephan Widmer, David Lush, <\/strong>Bishop, Jackson and\u00a0Cusack.<\/p>\n

And as he watched a replay of Titmus\u2019 race on ASCTA\u2019s Virtual Award\u2019s Presentation Boxall revealed he had to get away from his peers on the night in Gwangju as he watched the race unfold, finding a \u201cquite\u201d spot in the VIP area \u2013 alongside three-time Olympians, gold medallist Chris Fydler<\/strong> and Matt Dunn.<\/strong><\/p>\n

He was quick to praise his three mentors Volkers, Widmer and Bohl who he\u00a0 described as his \u201cTriangle of Power\u201d as well as his team of coaches who have helped him steer St Peters Western to the number one swim club in Australia.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to recognise Stefan, Michael and Scott who have all won the award and what a great feeling to think I\u2019m actually now there with them,\u201d said Boxall.<\/p>\n

\u201cI so glad I could stand there with those three \u2013 and I\u2019ve learnt so much from all of those guys in my career. So blessed to have had those coaches influence my career \u2013 all in different ways.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel very fortunate to have great coaches who have backed me, believed in me and put some time and energy into me.<\/p>\n

\u201cI always think of the three and there are times when the plan is thrown out the window and you have to think on your feet. I coached in Qatar for four-and-and-half years and did it by myself, I dug my teeth in, learning on the job, I had nobody, I learnt for the whole time, I got things wrong but just moved forward,<\/p>\n

\u201cI still look up to those three, who have all won Olympic gold, I\u2019m just the novice, I\u2019m not in their league.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Boxall, who also praised his assistant coach, Maxine Seear<\/strong> as well as his junior and age coaches Stewart Melton<\/strong> and John Gatfield, <\/strong>is certainly taking\u00a0his squad on a trajectory towards next year’s\u00a0Tokyo Olympics.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have to pay tribute to Maxine who I think is the greatest assistant coach in the world who compliments my attributes perfectly and I believe I do the same for her,\u201d said Boxall.<\/p>\n

\u2018Max really helps me manage St Peters Western Swim Club which is a beast in its own, and she is rightly fully up there with some of the greatest assistant coaches \u2013 and an integral part of a great team we have here.\u201d<\/p>\n

ASCTA also recognised SOPAC coach Adam Kable<\/strong> with an Outstanding Coaching Achievement Award for Matt Wilson\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0 world record equaling swim in the semi-final of the 200m breaststroke at last year\u2019s World Championships, while the \u201cgreat survivor\u201d of swim coaching in Australia John \u201cJR\u201d Rodgers<\/strong> won back-to-back Open Water Coach of the Year Awards.<\/p>\n

Rodgers coached Kareena Lee<\/strong> into seventh in last year\u2019s World Open Water 10km Championship and an automatic nomination for the Australian Olympic Team for Tokyo.<\/p>\n

The Multi-Class Coach of the Year Award was shared between Monte Swim Team Coach\u00a0Jon Bell<\/strong> for (Tiffany Thomas Kane’s <\/strong>100m breaststroke gold medal) and Belgravia coach Harley<\/strong> Connolly<\/strong> (for Lakeisha Patterson’s <\/strong>WR gold medal swim in the 400m freestyle) for their World Para Championship gold medal feats. Bell also received his “rookie coaches” Australian Team ring No 135.<\/p>\n

It was a day that also saw former AIS, VIS, WAIS coach\u00a0and ASCTA CEO Ralph Richards,<\/strong> the former coach of three-time Olympian, 1992 and 1996 silver bronze medallist Nicole Livingstone<\/strong> elevated to Life Membership for his 35-year services to coaching in Australia.<\/p>\n

Swim Australia also recognised the remarkable job that Australia\u2019s often unheralded swim teachers including:<\/p>\n
