He spent the last year working at a non-profit organization and as an assistant coach at Wheaton College in his native Illinois. He was scheduled to serve in the Peace Corps in Sierra Leone in June but that is unlikely to occur given the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a great honor,\u201d St. George said <a href=\"https:\/\/goduke.com\/news\/2020\/5\/20\/swimming-diving-st-george-receives-fullbright-scholarship.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in a university release<\/a>. \u201cI am really geared toward helping the whole world out, rather than brining myself up or just my country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019ll join the English Teaching Assistant Program, teaching English for 10 months. He will arrive in Malaysia in January, the project funded through the Fulbright Student Program.<\/p>\n<p>While at Duke, St. George spent the summer after his sophomore year in China with the Rubenstein-Bing Student-Athlete Civic Engagement Program (ACE), where he helped underserved communities with development resources, including sports activities and environmental science education.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the biggest impacts on me wanting to do philanthropic work was the ACE Program,\u201d St. George said. \u201cMy senior year I started talking to <strong>Emily Durham,<\/strong> the director of the ACE Program, and she encouraged me to look into programs like this. I looked into what they are, and I agreed with them more and more. I also think some of the classes encouraged me to have a more global approach to a career path.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Max St. George was also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/acc-swimming-saturday-recap-duke-sweeps-north-carolina-in-down-to-the-wire-dual\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a standout in the pool<\/a> for the Blue Devils. He scored at ACC Championships all four years and qualified for NCAAs as a senior in three events. He left Duke with team records in the 100 and 200 backstroke as well as a part of four relays, plus top-10 times in the 50 freestyle and 200 individual medley. St. George was a three-time member of the ACC Academic Honor Roll and a two-time All-ACC Academic team member.
