{"id":432485,"date":"2020-05-19T08:14:58","date_gmt":"2020-05-19T15:14:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=432485"},"modified":"2020-05-19T14:07:38","modified_gmt":"2020-05-19T21:07:38","slug":"jeremy-kipp-hired-as-usc-swimming-head-coach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/jeremy-kipp-hired-as-usc-swimming-head-coach\/","title":{"rendered":"Jeremy Kipp Hired as USC Swimming Head Coach"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Jeremy Kipp<\/strong> was announced as the new head coach of the men&#8217;s and women&#8217;s swimming programs at the University of Southern California on Tuesday morning, the school confirmed. Kipp joins the staff after two years as head coach at Northwestern, where he helped the Wildcat women climb the Big Ten ranks, finishing fourth this past season. He replaces the outgoing\u00a0<strong>Dave Salo<\/strong>, who stepped down as head coach at the end of the season.<\/p>\n<p>Kipp was instrumental in Northwestern qualifying four relays to the championships as well as seven individual swimmers. On paper, Northwestern was seeded to finish 17th before the meet was cancelled to slow down the coronavirus outbreak. Most notably, Kipp helped coach\u00a0<strong>Calypso Sheridan\u00a0<\/strong>into one of the premiere IM swimmers in the NCAA. He also helped recruit world class swimmers\u00a0<strong>Federico Burdisso <\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Kevin Houseman\u00a0<\/strong>to Evanston.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy family and I would like to thank Mike Bohn and USC\u2019s senior staff for this opportunity of a lifetime. A special thank you to Fred Uytengsu, who has been a great champion and tireless supporter of Trojan swimming and diving.\u00a0\u00a0We are very excited to reconnect with the Trojan Family and share our vision for ensuring the program\u2019s future success. There is no tradition like that of the USC swimming and diving program, one that is near and dear to my heart. I am honored and committed to leading USC to the highest level in and out of the pool.\u00a0\u00a0To our current Trojan swimmers and divers, I look forward to our journey together in consistently becoming one of the nation\u2019s top programs,&#8221; Jeremy Kipp said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI also want to thank Dr. Jim Phillips, the coaches and the Northwestern athletic department. We were able to accomplish significant strides in two years with the unyielding effort and commitment from the Wildcat student-athletes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before Northwestern, he was the three-time Mountain West Coach of the Year at Boise State from 2015 &#8211; 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Kipp also served as a former USC assistant for eight seasons under outgoing coach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/dave-salo-announces-this-is-his-last-season-as-southern-cal-head-coach\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Salo<\/a>, where the Trojans won the 2015 Pac-12 men&#8217;s team title, the school&#8217;s first since 1979.<\/p>\n<p>Kipp follows a line of great head coaches at the University of Southern California, becoming just the fifth head coach of the program, after\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ishof.org\/fred-a.-cady-(usa).html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Fred Cady<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ishof.org\/peter-daland--(usa).html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Peter Daland<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ishof.org\/mark-schubert.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mark Schubert<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>and Salo. Three of those coaches have been inducted in the International Swimming Hall of Fame, and Salo may be on his way soon as well.<\/p>\n<p>Kipp also has national and international coaching experience, mentoring 25 Olympic qualifiers who have gone on to earn 17 medals.<\/p>\n<p>Kipp served as the national team coach for Austria at the 2009 European Championships and was the personal coach for Austrian Olympian <strong>Markus Rogan<\/strong>, who won the meet\u2019s 200m IM. Kipp was also a member of Austria&#8217;s national team at the 2010 Short Course World Championships. He was with the Polish National Team at the 2013 European Short Course Championships.<\/p>\n<p>Kipp also served as the personal coach for Tunisian Olympic gold medalist <strong>Ous Mellouli<\/strong> at the 2009 Mediterranean Games, where he won five gold medals, and 2009 World Championships, where he won a gold and two silvers.<\/p>\n<p>Kipp competed collegiately at Bloomsburg (Penn.) University from 1994 to 1998, serving as team captain during the final two years. He graduated from Bloomsburg in 1999 with a bachelor&#8217;s degree in English.
