noreferrer\"><em>By Liz Byrnes<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Chad Le Clos<\/strong>\u00a0is playing his part in the fight against coronavirus in South Africa by designing and distributing face masks.<\/p>\n<p>The 2012 Olympic 200 fly champion, who is recovering from double surgery, is also raising money for the\u00a0<strong>Chad le Clos Foundation<\/strong>\u00a0whose aim is to develop swimming in the country with a focus on children from underprivileged backgrounds and also to offer assistance \u2013 financial and otherwise \u2013 to ensure swimmers reach their potential.<\/p>\n<p>The 28-year-old, who is staying at his parents\u2019 home in Durban, joined forces with a company called\u00a0<strong>Expand a Sign<\/strong>\u00a0in the city who were looking to help the community by developing face masks.<\/p>\n<p>He told Swimming World:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cDiscovery \u2013 one of my sponsors \u2013 bought 3000 and we\u2019re giving them to the police in Johannesburg and we are giving to hospitals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I am encouraging everyone in South Africa (and saying) that if they want to buy a mask 10 rand (0.55dollars) will go to my foundation which is helping swimming in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the moment my academy had to close because of the lockdown so what I\u2019ve done is set aside all the money that we\u2019ve raised and put it into a fund which I\u2019m giving out to swimmers who, for example, need to go to the World Cup or travel to swim at Mare Nostrum, up-and-coming swimmers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlso to community swimming projects in rural areas in Gugulethu, Soweto, big rural places.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have raised a couple of thousand dollars and we have a bit more coming in in November so we have some projects coming in at the end of December through to the first week in February if the lockdown has finished.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re giving a percentage to swimmers who haven\u2019t got a place to train and haven\u2019t had an opportunity to go and get proper training.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve had the foundation for about a year and I am just trying to give back. The swimming and diving championships will now be three days, as opposed to the four-day meet that was started in 2015 with the 200 medley and 800 free relays on Wednesday night.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/results\/pdf\/mac-womens-championships-full-results-ncaa-college-2020-02-26.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Akron won the women\u2019s swimming and diving<\/a>\u00a0championships for the Mid-American Conference in 2020 while\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/2020-mac-mens-swimming-championship-miami-makes-one-last-push\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Missouri State won the men\u2019s competition<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The coronavirus cancellations have had negative effects economically all over the United States. According to reports on the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/weibointl.api.weibo.com\/share\/147068396.html?weibo_id=4504937771466850\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chinese social media site Weibo<\/a>, there were some quick times posted at a time trial on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>2019 World Champ\u00a0<strong>Xu Jiayu\u00a0<\/strong>swam a 52.37 in the 100 backstroke, which was quicker than his\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/xu-jiayu-wins-stacked-mens-100-back-final-over-rylov-larkin-race-video\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">52.43 he swam in winning gold<\/a>\u00a0at the World Championships last year. Xu was one of the favorites to win gold in Tokyo over two laps after he won silver in Rio behind American\u00a0<strong>Ryan Murphy<\/strong>. If Xu Jiayu can touch first in the final in Tokyo, he would be the first Chinese man to ever win the event at the Games and would be the first non-American to do so since 1992.<\/p>\n<p>World junior record holder\u00a0<strong>Yang Junxuan<\/strong>\u00a0reportedly swam a 1:55.06 in the 200 freestyle, which was also faster than her 1:55.43 swim at the 2019 Worlds when she finished fifth. The time was under her world junior record time but will not count since the meet was not FINA sanctioned.<\/p>\n<p>Also of note, 2019 Worlds bronze medalist\u00a0<strong>Yan Zibei\u00a0<\/strong>swam a 59.5 in the 100 breaststroke while\u00a0<strong>Sun Jiajun\u00a0<\/strong>was a 52.27 in the 100 butterfly. Xu, Yan,\u00a0<strong>Zhang Yufei\u00a0<\/strong>and Yang also combined to swim a mixed medley relay and reportedly swam a 3:40.26, which would have won a bronze medal at the 2019 Worlds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Arno Kamminga<\/strong>\u00a0went 59.24 in a 100m breaststroke time trial in Amsterdam to again underline the breakthrough that has seen him propel himself to the upper echelons of world swimming.<\/p>\n<p>The Netherlands record holder was out in 27.86 and back in 31.38 and posted on social media: \u201cBlessed to be back in the pool. Solid race after a tough week.\u00a0<a class=\" xil3i\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/explore\/tags\/teamnl\/\">#teamnl\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The time was quicker than both his performances at last year\u2019s<strong>\u00a0World Championships<\/strong>\u00a0in\u00a0<strong>Gwangju<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>South Korea<\/strong>, where he clocked 59.39 and 59.49, finishing 13th overall.<\/p>\n<p>The 24-year-old is back training in the Dutch capital after time out of the water because of the coronavirus lockdown in the Netherlands.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Week That Was sponsored by Suitmate.
