{"id":432019,"date":"2020-05-14T12:07:32","date_gmt":"2020-05-14T19:07:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=432019"},"modified":"2020-05-22T19:50:55","modified_gmt":"2020-05-23T02:50:55","slug":"ohio-swimmers-can-count-down-to-may-26-opening-of-pools","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ohio-swimmers-can-count-down-to-may-26-opening-of-pools\/","title":{"rendered":"Ohio Swimmers Can Count Down to May 26 Opening of Pools"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Pools in Ohio can reopen May 26, the office of Governor <strong>Mike DeWine<\/strong> announced Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>DeWine\u2019s press conference centered broadly on child care, from day cares to day camps, with youth sports as an offshoot of his \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/coronavirus.ohio.gov\/wps\/portal\/gov\/covid-19\/responsible-restart-ohio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Responsible Restart Ohio<\/a>\u201d plan for the COVID-19 outbreak. As part of that plan, pools are eligible to open May 26.<\/p>\n<p>The reopening applies to pools regulated by local health departments, both public pools and private clubs. The order does not include waterparks or amusement parks, which fall under the tourism working group.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/decisions-loom-in-several-states-to-determine-fate-of-summer-swimming\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Decisions Loom in Several States to Determine Fate of Summer Swimming<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Recommendations for reopening Ohio pools, DeWine cited, were fielded from various industry-specific working groups. Reopening is subject to jurisdiction of local health departments. Further guidance will be posted to Ohio\u2019s reopening website by the end of the day.<\/p>\n<p>Day cares and day camps, the larger classification of businesses discussed, are eligible to reopen May 31 under enhanced social-distancing and sanitization guidelines. Also eligible to begin reopening on May 26 are gyms and fitness centers, while facilities for non-contact and limited-contact sports (golf, softball, baseball, tennis, paddle sports) can reopen May 26.<\/p>\n<p>Lt. Governor <strong>Jon Husted<\/strong> cited the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/php\/water.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">guidelines on risks of coronavirus transmission in treated water<\/a>. But he stressed that additional measures will be put in place at Ohio pools surrounding the return to the water to ensure that the spread of the virus can be effectively halted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know that athletic facilities, working out, provides both mental and physical benefits to people,\u201d Husted said. \u201cBut we also know it\u2019s very important that we keep these surfaces, these places, clean and that we follow the protocols so that we don\u2019t create any unnecessary contact or spread through the reopening of these facilities.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Swimming Through a Pandemic<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><em>The postponements and cancellations wrought by COVID-19 haven\u2019t just affected the Olympics and the ranks of elite swimmers.
