Struggle On A Trip To Local Store"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Chad Le Clos<\/strong> was confronted with the brutal reality of life for the poor during the pandemic in South Africa when a trip to the local grocery store opened his eyes to the desperation that hunger and poverty can bring.<\/p>\n<p>The four-time Olympic medalist was walking with his girlfriend <strong>Jeanni Mulder<\/strong> in Durban to buy provisions when a man jumped out at him and asked if Le Clos had any money.<\/p>\n<p>Three more people came behind them and surrounded, outnumbered and on a road without people or traffic with South Africa in its strictest stage of lockdown, it was an uncomfortable situation to say the least.<\/p>\n<p>Le Clos, while admitting the situation appeared \u201cquite scary,\u201d remained calm and realized the folks just wanted help and food.<\/p>\n<p>That followed an similar experience days earlier when he came out of a shop to see a 15-strong group of people who had lost their jobs because of the coronavirus.<\/p>\n<p>He was asked: \u201c\u2018Hey boss, please can I have some food?\u201d and he returned to the store to buy bread, milk and coca-cola, at a cost to him of US$7 at most.<\/p>\n<p>Le Clos recalled the incidents hoping to shine a light on the effect of the pandemic on those who can least afford it in his native South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>He told Swimming World:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThat was when I realized how bad it was because I\u2019d been watching the news and stuff but I hadn\u2019t seen it for real.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s quite bad in South Africa at the moment in the sense that poor people are getting absolutely destroyed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause we have no economy now because there\u2019s no work, the poorer people that don\u2019t have any cash flow are struggling big time.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_354385\" style=\"width: 396px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-354385\" data-attachment-id=\"354385\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/arena-and-chad-le-clos-extend-successful-collaboration\/chad-le-clos_ph-credit_lapresse-2_resized\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Chad-Le-Clos_ph.credit_LaPresse-2_resized.jpg\" data-orig-size=\"1013,720\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}\" data-image-title=\"Chad Le Clos_ph.credit_LaPresse (2)_resized\" data-image-description=\"&lt;p&gt;18.9.19&lt;br \/&gt;\n2\/27\/19&lt;br \/&gt;\nChad Le Clos_ph.credit_LaPresse (2)_resized&lt;\/p&gt;\n\" data-image-caption=\"&lt;p&gt;Chad Le Clos &#8211; Photo Courtesy: arena and La Presse<\/p><\/div>\n<p>He added:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt\u2019s an eye-opener to see how desperate it is at the moment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s very sad because I\u2019ve got a home, my family, we\u2019ve got food. The doctors said he wouldn\u2019t last six months in 2016 \u2013 before the Olympics \u2013 and he lasted this long so it is just sad that he had to pass away by himself in the hospital because we weren\u2019t allowed to see him because of the covid. It has been a sad time for everyone, especially my dad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were very close. Just a warrior you know. He refused to quit, absolute warrior. It was just sad the way it all went down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just feel like he didn\u2019t deserve that ending, you know what I mean? Warriors like that don\u2019t deserve to go down like that, it\u2019s just sad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis father is 97 and he had to bury his son.
