{"id":431190,"date":"2020-05-08T14:42:00","date_gmt":"2020-05-08T21:42:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=431190"},"modified":"2020-05-08T14:42:00","modified_gmt":"2020-05-08T21:42:00","slug":"passages-former-indiana-swimmer-coach-david-tanner-70","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/passages-former-indiana-swimmer-coach-david-tanner-70\/","title":{"rendered":"Passages: Former Indiana Swimmer, Coach David Tanner, 70"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Dr. David Tanner,<\/strong> who swam at the University of Indiana in its heyday in the late 1960s and early 1970s and went on to a successful coaching career, died Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Tanner had battled lymphoma. He was 70 years old.<\/p>\n<p>A native of Danville, Illinois, Tanner arrived in Bloomington in 1968 to join the juggernaut built by Hoosiers coach <strong>James \u201cDoc\u201d Counsilman.<\/strong> Tanner wasn\u2019t a star at IU. But on teams that won six straight NCAA championships, led by Olympians <strong>Mark Spitz, Gary Hall Sr., Charlie Hickcox<\/strong> and <strong>John Kinsella,<\/strong> Tanner was a valuable member of the team.<\/p>\n<p>He remained part of the connective tissue of that group post-graduation and served as \u201cteam archivist, the Counsilman historian, the event planner, and the perpetuator of all things Counsilman. Perhaps most importantly to him, he became a devoted friend, affectionate caregiver and valued confidante to both Doc, Marge and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/a-tribute-to-brian-counsilman\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Counsilman family<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Dave Tanner was one of our most beloved swimming and diving alums,\u201d Indiana coach <strong>Ray Looze<\/strong> said <a href=\"https:\/\/iuhoosiers.com\/news\/2020\/5\/8\/mens-swimming-and-diving-indiana-swimming-and-diving-mourns-the-loss-of-david-tanner.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in a university statement<\/a>. \u201cIndiana University swimmer, coach, professor, caretaker of both Marge and Doc, and historian of all things IU swimming. He is irreplaceable and will forever be missed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tanner stayed connected to swimming, returning as Counsilman\u2019s assistant for two seasons. He took over the boys program at Bloomington High School North in 1998 and stayed for more than 20 years.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">It is with a heavy heart that we share the news of the passing of longtime BHSN Swim Coach, Dave Tanner. His athletic endeavors included \u201ctrail runs, orienteering competitions, canoe races, open water competitions, kayak camping, river running and back country mountaineering.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tanner <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sportphysiology.com\/davetanner.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">received degrees<\/a> from IU in Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics, Exercise Physiology, and Human Performance, the latter a doctorate, in 2001. He taught classes in the Department of Kinesiology and spent nearly two decades at the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iu.edu\/counsilmancenter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Counsilman Center for the Science of Swimming<\/a>, serving as a director of athletic assessment and research associate. In the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/nbsp-a-personal-appreciation-doc-counsilman-educator-scholar-coach-and-friend\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">mold of his mentor<\/a> Counsilman, Tanner was an all-around polymath.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dr. David Tanner, who swam at the University of Indiana in its heyday in the late
