{"id":430821,"date":"2020-05-06T13:40:58","date_gmt":"2020-05-06T20:40:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=430821"},"modified":"2020-05-22T14:29:12","modified_gmt":"2020-05-22T21:29:12","slug":"the-worries-and-concerns-of-lap-swimming-when-pools-open","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/the-worries-and-concerns-of-lap-swimming-when-pools-open\/","title":{"rendered":"The Worries and Concerns of Lap Swimming As Pools Open"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Lap swimming may not be deemed a safe activity if people are not adhering to social distancing guidelines.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>As we get deeper into the month of May and online schooling comes to a close, many people will be hoping to spend their summer days by the pool. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/php\/water.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">According to the CDC<\/a>, &#8220;there is no evidence that the virus that causes COVID-19 can be spread to people through the water in pools, hot tubs, spas, or water play areas. Proper operation and maintenance (including disinfection with chlorine and bromine) of these facilities should inactivate the virus in the water.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>So as the virus starts to (hopefully) slow down, a return to the pool\u00a0 will happen for some longing to dive in and be immersed in that environment on a hot summer&#8217;s day. But according to a recent report from <em>The Mercury News\u00a0<\/em>in San Jose, California, it might be harder than originally thought to social distance in a public pool.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s more and more research showing that coronavirus can be spread even more than six feet when people are vigorously exercising like running or swimming,\u201d Contra Costa County\u2019s Health Officer <strong>Christopher Farnitano<\/strong> said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=KDQCMl7RRog&amp;feature=youtu.be\">in a video interview<\/a>\u00a0posted by the county. \u201cThere\u2019s a concern that even if someone is swimming in their own lane, when the person is right next to them is breathing heavily, they could be exposed. It\u2019s hard to maintain that kind of social distancing in a public pool.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lap swimmers also would have trouble maintaining an appropriate physical distance if more than one stops at the end of a lane to rest or to wait for another swimmer to finish, Lavin acknowledged.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/usa-swimming-sends-out-guidelines-to-make-practice-safe-for-athletes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">USA Swimming has published guidelines<\/a> to teams regarding strict social distancing guidelines if they are to hold organized practice. Swimmers will be permitted to stay within six feet of each other in the pool with a limited number of swimmers in each lane. USA Swimming provided the following visual aids to illustrate what would be appropriate.
