{"id":430404,"date":"2020-05-04T21:09:25","date_gmt":"2020-05-05T04:09:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=430404"},"modified":"2020-05-05T05:22:43","modified_gmt":"2020-05-05T12:22:43","slug":"mark-schubert-provides-proof-usa-swimming-sent-letter-concerning-possibility-of-opening-mission-viejo-pool-for-practice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/mark-schubert-provides-proof-usa-swimming-sent-letter-concerning-possibility-of-opening-mission-viejo-pool-for-practice\/","title":{"rendered":"Mark Schubert Confirms USA Swimming Sent Letter On Possibility Of Opening Mission Viejo Pool for Practice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mission Viejo Nadadores coach\u00a0<strong>Mark Schubert\u00a0<\/strong>confirmed to<em> Swimming World\u00a0<\/em>on Monday night that he did have a personalized letter sent to him from USA Swimming that stated the organization would not prohibit the club from holding organized practices, as long as the club was respecting guidelines put in place by local, state and federal public health officials.<\/p>\n<p><em>Swimming World<\/em>\u00a0spoke to Schubert after<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/usa-swimming-denies-letter-specifically-allowing-mission-viejo-to-hold-organized-practice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> USA Swimming denied having sent a letter to the coach specifically allowing Mission Viejo to hold organized practice<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We were able to verify that Schubert received a letter that was addressed to him and\u00a0that Schubert received approval from the City of Mission Viejo to conduct practices by following local guidelines.<\/p>\n<p>In both instances, it appears that Schubert could move forward.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier in the day, a USA Swimming spokesperson told Swimming World that Mission Viejo received the same guidance that all clubs received, which directed MVN to follow local, state and federal rules.<\/p>\n<p>Both letters never gave official approval, but the one that Schubert received emphasized that USA Swimming could not \u201cprohibit\u201d practices as long as guidelines were followed.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><strong>&#8220;We are trying to do everything by the book as the city has asked us to do \u2014 including getting the letter,&#8221; Schubert said. &#8220;I think we are doing a great job of doing that.&#8221;<\/strong><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">This news comes after Schubert <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/mission-viejo-and-mark-schubert-splash-again-under-strict-social-distancing-guidelines\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">held his first organized practice<\/a> on Friday after he told\u00a0<em>Swimming World\u00a0<\/em>that he had received clearance from USA Swimming and the city of Mission Viejo as long as he and his athletes adhered to strict social distancing guidelines in place. The city of Mission Viejo sent guidelines to follow for the implementation of practice sessions, and these policies were followed when 18 swimmers resumed practice on Friday.<\/div>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/ishof.org\/mark-schubert.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">seven-time Olympic coach<\/a> and the former National Team Director for USA Swimming, Mark Schubert is in his second stint as the head coach of the Mission Viejo Nadadores. His first stint at the Southern California club produced Olympic champions <strong>Brian Goodell<\/strong> and <strong>Shirley Babashoff<\/strong>. Schubert has also guided Hall of Famers <strong>Janet Evans<\/strong>, <strong>Lenny Krayzelburg<\/strong> and <strong>Tiffany Cohen<\/strong>, among others.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, Schubert is coaching a pair of Olympic hopefuls in <strong>Michael Brinegar<\/strong> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/katie-crom-swimming-worlds-up-and-comer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Katie Crom<\/strong><\/a>. Brinegar is a contender to qualify for the 2021 Olympic Games in the distance-freestyle events, while Crom is a threat to earn an Olympic bid in the 200
