Missy Franklin<\/strong> announced via Instagram Monday that she is joining the board of Yuwa, a youth sports program in Jharkhand, India, for at-risk young girls.<\/p>\n

Franklin learned about the program at last year\u2019s Laureus World Sports Awards, where Yuwa won the Sport for Good Award<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Wrote Franklin<\/a>:<\/p>\n

\u201cToday is a very special day. I get to officially announce that I have been asked to be on the Board for YUWA, a program in Jharkhand, India that uses team sports and education to break the cycle of childhood marriage for young girls. \u2026<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cYUWA is truly making a difference in the lives of these determined, brilliant, and motivated young girls. I am SO honored to be even a small part of this unbelievable program. Our immediate goal is to raise money to build a permanent campus for the young women out there, and Hayes and I cannot wait to actually get out there ourselves (when it\u2019s safe to travel, etc.)\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Today is a very special day. I get to officially announce that I have been asked to be on the Board for YUWA, a program in Jharkhand, India that uses team sports and education to break the cycle of childhood marriage for young girls. I had the extreme honor of meeting Rose, Franz, Radha, Neeta, Hema, and Konika at the @laureussport World Sports Awards in 2019, where YUWA won the award for the project of the year. 5 out of 10 girls in Jharkhand drop out of school to become childhood brides, but now with a football program with over 300 young girls, coached by mainly young women, and a school teaching English and college prep for universities in India and abroad, YUWA is truly making a difference in the lives of these determined, brilliant, and motivated young girls. I am SO honored to be even a small part of this unbelievable program.
