Photo Courtesy: Murray Rose Collection.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>But for Rose and his coach, the legendary Sam Herford, things didn\u2019t always go according to plan at a pool open to all kinds of weather and the deafening sounds of trains that would so often delay the start of races.<\/p>\n<p>Rose had recalled that on one occasion Herford\u2019s pre-race instructions were: \u201cIf I was behind my pace he would put up an umbrella and if I was ahead he would keep it down signaling \u2018no worries\u2019 but while I was swimming, it started to drizzle, which I didn\u2019t realise. This caused everyone in the stands to put up their umbrellas!<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI couldn\u2019t even see Sam, and assumed that he had his umbrella up, too. I found out later that this was not true, so he would probably have been getting drenched. It made me think I was behind all the way, so I ended up going much faster and trying much harder than I would have otherwise. New South Wales under-14 110 and 440 yards (100 and 400 metres) freestyle titles en-route to one of the most stellar gold medal careers of any Olympian and front cover film-stardom in the US.<\/p>\n<p>In January 1955, Murray Rose arrived big time, beating the Empire Games champion Gary Chapman&#8217;s Australian 440 yards freestyle record by two seconds at North Sydney Olympic Pool.<\/p>\n<p>Rose listed the harbour side pool, as a favourite, a pool that saw <strong>Frank O\u2019Neill<\/strong> set its first world record in the pool in the 400m individual medley in 1953.<\/p>\n<p>The final world record would be in 1978 when Moscow Olympic golden girl <strong>Michelle Ford<\/strong> set a new world mark of 8:31.30 in the 800m freestyle also at the NSW Championships.<\/p>\n<p>In between the likes of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/swimming-world-presents-takeoff-to-tokyo-dawn-fraser-and-the-1964-tokyo-olympic-games\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dawn Fraser<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/ishof.org\/lorraine-crapp.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lorraine Crapp<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/ishof.org\/john-devitt-(aus).html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">John Devitt<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/ishof.org\/kevin-berry.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kevin Berry<\/a>, <a Konrads<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/ishof.org\/shane-gould--(aus).html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shane Gould<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/ishof.org\/brad-cooper.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brad Cooper<\/a>, Graham Windeatt, Jenny Turrall <\/strong>and <a href=\"https:\/\/ishof.org\/steve-holland-(aus).html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Stephen Holland<\/strong><\/a> would add their names that adorn the historic Wall of Fame \u2013 still a major tourist attraction.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_430188\"
