THE Dayton Synchronettes stepped to the top of the podium on Sunday winning the team&#39;s 12th overall national title in 28 years at the 2002 U.S. Masters Synchronized Swimming Championships.<\/p>\n<p>Dayton scored 120 championship points to take home the club&#39;s first high point trophy since the 2000 Masters at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.<\/p>\n<p>Close behind with 106 points were the Ramapo (N.J.) Aquamasters, who were recently featured in a Tylenol commercial which aired nationally in the spring of 2002. In third place was MAC Synchro of Portland, Ore. whose two team golds on Sunday lifted the club to a one-point margin over 13-time Masters champions the Southern California Unsynchables, 90-89.<\/p>\n<p>Dayton swam uncontested in the 30-39 Grandmaster division, scoring an 80.195. Swimming for the Synchronettes were Mary Kay Adams, Sarah Aguirre, SarahLydia Keihl, Megan Kreil, Emily Marsh and Deborah Thomas. <\/p>\n<p>The Synchronettes also struck gold in 60-69 with a 64.392 behind the efforts of Jeanne Carlson, Marian Kretschmer, Shirley Monce, Carol Suhich, and Lieneke Keihl.<\/p>\n<p>Cumulatively, Dayton earned six golds, three silvers and one bronze during the Championships. Ramapo, though earning only one gold, scored four silvers<br \/>\nand five bronze. MAC won the gold count with seven and added one silver.<\/p>\n<p>The Keuka connection of alums Cathy Joyce and Kristen Broome, and Storm mom Carol McGeoch swam to a fifth-place finish in 30-39 with a score of 66.545.<\/p>\n<p>Free routine scores are weighted to 50 percent and added to 50 percent ofthe Friday&#39;s technical program scores to determine the medalists. Grandmaster denotes competitors who are previous national champions or<br \/>\nnational finalists in collegiate, junior or senior national events.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly 250 of the nation&#39;s top Masters synchronized swimmers were on hand competing for solo, duet, trio and team national titles at the Weed Physical Arts Center on the campus of Keuka College. The Masters championships began in 1975, making the 2002 event the 28th annual competition. <\/p>\n<p>Dayton now looks to defend its title at the 2003 U.S. Masters Championships to be held Oct. 23-26 on the campus of Cleveland State University in Cleveland, Ohio.<\/p>\n<p>Complete results can be found at www.usasynchro.org.
