I: Virgina&#8217;s Cavaliers Beat South Carolina"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Oct. 26.  THE Virginia men&#39;s and women&#39;s swimming and diving teams successfully opened their respective 2002-2003 seasons with victories over SEC rival South Carolina today at the UVa Aquatic and Fitness Center. <\/p>\n<p>The Cavalier men won seven events in a 129-109 victory, while the UVa women won nine of 13 events in a 131-107 win over the Gamecocks.  Both South Carolina squads fall to 1-1 on the season.<\/p>\n<p>In the Virginia men&#39;s 129-109 victory, highly touted UVa first-year Francis Crippen (Conshohocken, Pa.\/<br \/>\nGermantown Academy) turned in an impressive performance<br \/>\nwith dominating swims in the 500 and 1000 freestyles.  In his first collegiate race, Crippen set a UVa Aquatic and Fitness Center record in winning the 1000 free with a time of 8:59.53, which was 41 hundredths of a second shy of third-year teammate Ian Prichard&#39;s (Ventura, Calif.\/Buena) school and conference record.  Crippen also won the 500 free with a time of 4:26.45.  Prichard was second to Crippen in both events with times of 4:33.19 and 9:20.06 in the 500 and 1000 free, respectively. <\/p>\n<p>Second-year Michael Raab (Rockville, Md.\/Walter Johnson) was also impressive in the Cavaliers&#39; season-opener.  He led a top-four UVa sweep in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:48.38 and also swam a leg on the winning 400 medley relay (3:23.26).  <\/p>\n<p>Third-years Luke Wagner (Englewood, Colo.\/Regis Jesuit) and Luke Anderson (Charlottesville, Va.\/Bolles School) and fourth-year Jon Baird (Nashville, Tenn.\/<br \/>\nMontgomery Bell Academy) each swam legs on the winning medley relay.  Wagner and Anderson also posted victories in the 200 backstroke (1:47.65) and 100 free (45.50), respectively.  <\/p>\n<p>Fourth-year Guy Yimsomruay (Bangkok, Thailand\/<br \/>\nGermantown Academy) rounded out UVa&#39;s event winners as he won the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:50.17.<\/p>\n<p>South Carolina&#39;s Andy Bradley  swept the one and three-meter diving events.  He set the AFC pool record in the three-meter competition with a score of 354.23 and his point total of 315.53 on the one-meter board was just shy of the pool record.  Chris McCrary won the 50 free (20.45), while Tamas Szucs took the 200 free (1:40.12).<\/p>\n<p>The Virginia women received outstanding performances from several swimmers in a 131-107 victory over South Carolina.  <\/p>\n<p>Second-year Andrea Georoff (Winter Park, Fla.\/Trinity Prep) won three events, while fourth-year Cara Lane (Charlotte, N.C.\/Providence) and first-year Brielle White (Philadelphia, Pa.\/Springside School) both won two events.  <\/p>\n<p>Georoff was victorious in the 50 and 100 frees with times of 23.21 and 50.59, respectively, and also swam the anchor leg on the Cavaliers&#39; winning 400 medley relay (3:48.13).  <\/p>\n<p>White, second-year Coco Buck (Herndon, Va.\/Herndon) and third-year Cynthia Roller (Herndon, Va.\/Herndon) also swam legs on the winning relay.  White also won the 200 backstroke with an impressive time of 2:02.22.  <\/p>\n<p>Lane won the 1000 free (9:50.38) and led a top four UVa sweep in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:02.08.  Lane was also second to first-year Rachael Burke (Bethesda, Md.\/Good Counsel) in the 500 free.  Burke won the 500 free with a time of 4:51.60, while Lane was second in 4:54.86.  Burke was also runner-up to Lane in the 1000 free (9:54.51).  <\/p>\n<p>Third-year Carlie Dykehouse (Gainesville, Fla.\/Trinity Prep) and fourth-year Mirjana Bosevska (Skopje, Macedonia\/Trinity Prep) rounded out UVa&#39;s event winners.  Dykehouse won the 200 free (1:50.51) and Bosevska grabbed the top spot in the 200 individual medley (2:03.92).  Dykehouse was also second in the 200 fly (2:03.21). <\/p>\n<p>South Carolina&#39;s Lauren King swept the one and three-meter diving competitions.  She won the one-meter board with 311.48 points and took the three-meter board with a score of 304.50.<\/p>\n<p>UVa returns to action on November 2 when both squads host Duke at 1:00 p.m. at the Aquatic and Fitness Center.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Oct. 26.
