The outbreak is not only confined to Japan &#8230; it\u2019s a worldwide issue.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Last week, <strong>Kentaro Iwata<\/strong>, a specialist in infectious diseases, said he thought it \u201cunlikely\u201d that the Games would be held just over a year from now.<\/p>\n<p><a style=\"font-size: 16px;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/tokyo-olympic-games-in-july-2021-or-never-says-ioc-member-dick-pound-urging-athlete-patience\/\">IOC vice-president <strong>Dick Pound<\/strong> also said in an intervie<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">w with the Canadian Broadcast Corporation (CBC) that Japan had indicated it could not sustain a further postponement were the pandemic not brought under control by that time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>But on Tuesday, <strong>Tokyo 2020<\/strong> president <strong>Yoshiro Mori<\/strong> said the Olympics would be \u201cscrapped\u201d if they that be the case, a now-or-never scenario.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with Japanese sports daily Nikkan Sports, Mori said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cNo. In that case, the Olympics will be scrapped.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He was however confident the Games would go ahead in 2021, saying:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe have delayed the Olympics until next summer after we will have won the battle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Olympics would be much more valuable than any Olympics in the past if we could go ahead with it after winning this battle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have to believe this otherwise our hard work and efforts will not be rewarded.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Asked about Mori\u2019s comments, Tokyo 2020 spokesman <strong>Masa Takaya<\/strong> told a news briefing reported by agency Reuters, saying:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cNew dates for the Tokyo 2020 Games have been set and our mission is to deliver the Games next year.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So too were the dates critical to<strong> FINA<\/strong>&#8216;s decision as to when they would reschedule the World Championships which had been due to be held in <strong>Fukuoka, Japan,<\/strong> from 16 July to 1 August 2021.<\/p>\n<p>The FINA executive met remotely on Monday and\u00a0Swimming World understands that October 2021 was ruled out after organisers and broadcasters in Japan made clear a
