{"id":429152,"date":"2020-04-27T12:34:20","date_gmt":"2020-04-27T19:34:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=429152"},"modified":"2020-04-27T16:52:27","modified_gmt":"2020-04-27T23:52:27","slug":"gemma-spofforth-shuane-fraser-picked-for-university-of-florida-athletic-hall-of-fame","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/gemma-spofforth-shuane-fraser-picked-for-university-of-florida-athletic-hall-of-fame\/","title":{"rendered":"Gemma Spofforth, Shaune Fraser Picked for University of Florida Athletic Hall of Fame"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Gemma Spofforth<\/strong> and <strong>Shaune Fraser<\/strong> are among eight Gators announced Monday as part of the University of Florida Athletics Hall of Fame\u2019s Class of 2020.<\/p>\n<p>The group, <a href=\"https:\/\/floridagators.com\/news\/2020\/4\/27\/general-2020-uf-athletic-hall-of-fame-class-announced.aspx\">selected by the University of Florida F Club and Gator Boosters, Inc.<\/a>, will be inducted in a ceremony at a date to be announced.<\/p>\n<p>The two swimmers, guided by longtime Florida coach <strong>Gregg Troy<\/strong>, were contemporaries in Gainesville from 2006-10 and have five Olympic Games between them.<\/p>\n<p>Fraser is a three-time NCAA individual champion in the 200 freestyle and 200 butterfly (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ncaa-division-i-mens-championships-floridas-shaune-fraser-defends-title-in-200-fly-after-mark-dylla-draws-dq\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">twice<\/a>). He set the NCAA record in the 200 fly in 2009. Photo Courtesy: Peter H.Bick<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Fraser was a three-time Olympian (2004, 2008, 2012) and served as the flag bearer for the Cayman Islands at the 2008 Olympics. He won three individual Pan American Games medals.<\/p>\n<p>Spofforth was part of the Gators\u2019 2009 SEC Championship and the 2010 NCAA champion squad. The two-time SEC Female Swimmer of the Year won seven individual NCAA champs, including the 200 backstroke in 2009 in an NCAA record time, and was named an All-American 25 times.<\/p>\n<p>Spofforth swam in two Olympics (2008 and 2012) representing Great Britain. She won gold at the 2009 World Championships in Rome, setting the world record in the 100 backstroke, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/kylie-masse-finally-breaks-vaunted-100-back-world-record\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a record that held until 2017<\/a> when <strong>Kylie Masse<\/strong> broke it.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to Gemma Spofforth and Shaune Fraser, the rest of the Hall of Fame Class of 2020 includes men\u2019s basketball player <strong>Andrew DeClercq<\/strong>; football players <strong>Brandon James, Brandon Spikes<\/strong> and <strong>Tim Tebow;<\/strong> women\u2019s track and field athlete <strong>Mariam Kevkhishvili;<\/strong> and men\u2019s tennis player <strong>Hamid Mirzadeh.<\/strong> Two-time national championship basketball coach <strong>Billy Donovan<\/strong> was named the honorary letter winner.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gemma Spofforth and Shaune Fraser are among eight Gators announced Monday as part of the University of Florida Athletics Hall of Fame\u2019s Class of 2020.
