When will we have a major competition again? Swimming Canada believes it will be the end of this year.<\/em><\/p>\n

With the coronavirus turning the 2020 calendar upside down, federations all over the world are trying to revise their calendar for 2021 to mimic the Olympic year now that the Tokyo Olympics will be held in the same time frame, just a year later. Swimming Canada finalized the dates of its Olympic Trials this week<\/a>, putting them April 7 – 11, shortening the schedule.<\/p>\n

With those set in stone, Canadians shooting for the Olympic Team in Tokyo now have that target date. But the question remains: when will it be safe to have mass gatherings for major competitions again? According to a release<\/a> sent by Swimming Canada, they are hoping to send a larger than usual squad to the World Short Course Championships in December in Abu Dhabi, if circumstances allow.<\/p>\n

Swimming Canada is also hoping to hold a training camp August 25 – 29 to “bring open water and pool swimmers back together and reset for the year ahead as they return to their home programs.” That would be possible if training facilities are re-opened by the end of the summer.<\/p>\n

The Speedo Can Am Para Swimming Open remains scheduled for Dec. 11-13, 2020, at the University of British Columbia Aquatic Centre in Vancouver. The Paralympic program would invite all swimmers with a minimum qualifying standard for the Tokyo Games, as well as targeted NextGen swimmers, to a relaunch camp beginning Dec. 5.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur swimmers have missed out on the opportunity to compete at an Olympic or Paralympic Games this year, so we are looking at the next best opportunities to bring them together to bond, train and compete at a high level,\u201d said High Performance Director and National Coach John Atkinson<\/strong><\/a>. \u201cWe realize plans may have to change as the global pandemic situation continues to evolve, but we thought it was important to announce what our plans would be. We have been consulting with many of our top athletes and coaches and engaging them in this process, which is based on the best available information that we have right now.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
