Double Olympic medallist James Guy<\/strong> was lost for words before shock turned into confusion and questions after hearing that Sun Yang<\/strong> had been invited by the Chinese Swimming Association<\/strong> (CSA) to join the Olympic swimming team for Tokyo 2021 training.<\/p>\n

Swimming World had learned of an official notice showing that Sun was among swimmers, coaches and others invited to take part in three-month Olympic training programmes from April to June.<\/a><\/p>\n

This despite Sun having been given an eight-year ban by the Court of Arbritration for Sport<\/strong> (CAS) which upheld the World Anti-Doping Agency\u2019<\/strong>s (WADA) appeal against FINA\u2019s original decision not to sanction the Chinese after an incident-fuelled out-of-competition test in September 2018.<\/p>\n

Swimming World alerted WADA and within hours the CSA issued a new document stating the previous invitation to Olympic training was invalid.<\/p>\n

Guy beat Sun to the 200 free title at the 2015 World Championships in Kazan, Russia, with the Chinese winning the Olympic title 12 months later in Rio de Janeiro and the Briton in fourth.<\/p>\n

Ahead of him Sun and Conor Dwyer<\/strong> who was suspended in October 2019 and subsequently retired after testing positive for anabolic agents.<\/a><\/p>\n

Guy<\/a>, who is coached by Dave McNulty<\/strong> at Bath National Training Centre, one of many athletes directly affected by those subsequently banned and he was shocked to hear of the Sun situation.<\/p>\n

He told Swimming World:<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy? I\u2019m speechless: why have they done that when he\u2019s not allowed to compete? I just don\u2019t understand why. I am baffled by it, I don\u2019t know what to say.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m really confused is what I would say. I haven\u2019t got a clue, I\u2019m shocked by what I\u2019ve heard and I\u2019m really confused and stunned.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019ve been to CAS, he\u2019s been given a ban and that\u2019s it. It\u2019s over.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Guy is one of only three athletes \u2013 the others being Australian Mack Horton<\/strong> and Kosuke Hagino<\/strong> of Japan \u2013 to have beaten Sun over 200 and 400 free since the 2013 World Championships in Barcelona where he took the 400-800-1500 clean sweep.<\/p>\n

As well as Guy\u2019s triumph in Kazan, Horton \u2013 who led the way with podium protests at the 2019 worlds in Gwangju with Duncan Scott<\/strong> also standing up for his beliefs<\/a> \u2013 took the 400 title in Rio while Hagino won the 200 free at the 2014 Asian Games.<\/p>\n

Chad le Clos<\/strong> has long been vocal about wanting to upgrade his silver medal from Rio behind Sun who Guy believes should not have been there following his doping positive in 2014.<\/p>\n

Instead, he calls for long-term bans to be issued.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s not a jealous thing: make it a fair playing field. If you\u2019ve done something bad, he shouldn\u2019t have been there. I\u2019m pretty sure the rest of the world will back me up on that.<\/p>\n

\u201cSun should not have been in Rio and that\u2019s it \u2013 he shouldn\u2019t have been there. Anyone\u2019s who\u2019s a drug cheat shouldn\u2019t have been at the Games \u2013 that\u2019s it.<\/p>\n

\u201cSun is now banned but when he was still there and people who had doped are still there \u2013 it\u2019s not a fair playing field. If you\u2019ve been caught you should be banned for 10 years or for life and that\u2019s it. There\u2019s no oh yeah, this and that. Otherwise it gets messy and it becomes unfair.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

So too was it a good day when the CAS decision<\/a> was handed down.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen that came out my phone just went ding, ding, ding, ding. And just the mood and people messaging me saying \u2018oh my god this has happened\u2019. I haven\u2019t seen anything like it. It just shows that nature takes its course.<\/p>\n

\u201cGood things come to those who wait and that\u2019s it, isn\u2019t it? Everything happens for a reason so obviously he has done what he has done and he\u2019s got an eight-year ban and it\u2019s as simple as that.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
