A new short film released Wednesday by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iamsecond.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">I Am Second<\/a> details Long\u2019s struggles toward forming her identity as a person beyond being a top swimmer.<\/p>\n<p>Long, born with fibular hemimelia, was born in Russia and given up for adoption by her mother. She grew up in Maryland where she developed a love for swimming at a young age. By age 12, she was part of the U.S. Paralympic Team\u2019s delegation to the 2004 Games in Athens, winning three gold medals. She\u2019s won <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teamusa.org\/para-swimming\/athletes\/Jessica-Long\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">13 gold medals and 23 total medals<\/a> across four Olympic Games, while becoming a sponsored professional athlete, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/13-time-gold-medal-paralympian-jessica-long-releases-autobiography-unsinkable\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">an author<\/a> and an international ambassador for Paralympic athletes.<\/p>\n<p>Long continued to collect accolades, including 18 world records in a single year. But crafting her identity solely around what she\u2019d accomplished in the pool didn\u2019t offer the fulfillment she was looking for.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy worth was in swimming. My identity was in swimming,\u201d Jessica Long said. \u201cBut I realized I had no control over my life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Long\u2019s voyage toward greater peace and self-acceptance came through her faith.
