{"id":428197,"date":"2020-04-21T19:15:55","date_gmt":"2020-04-22T02:15:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=428197"},"modified":"2020-04-21T22:12:39","modified_gmt":"2020-04-22T05:12:39","slug":"uncertainty-over-safety-of-2021-olympic-games-still-looming-for-bob-bowman-allison-schmitt-others","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/uncertainty-over-safety-of-2021-olympic-games-still-looming-for-bob-bowman-allison-schmitt-others\/","title":{"rendered":"Uncertainty Over Safety of 2021 Olympic Games Is Life For Bob Bowman, Allison Schmitt &#038; Others"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Bob Bowman: \u201cWe\u2019re very comfortable now with \u2018I don\u2019t know.\u2019 \u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Even with the Olympic Games being pushed back to 2021 because of the coronavirus pandemic, health officials in Japan have expressed uncertainty that the virus will be contained by then.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo be honest with you, I don\u2019t think the Olympics is likely to be held next year,\u201d <strong>Kentaro Iwata<\/strong>, a professor of infectious disease at Kobe University,\u00a0<a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/japanese-infectious-diseases-specialist-very-pessimistic-tokyo-2021-olympics-can-go-ahead\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-t-l=\"|inline|intext|n\/a\">said on a teleconference Monday<\/a>. \u201cHolding the Olympics needs two conditions; one, controlling COVID-19 in Japan, and controlling COVID-19 everywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Games are still 458 days away, but it is still unclear when it will be safe to hold large gatherings, let alone have people fly from all over the world to Tokyo, which has had a recent spike in COVID-19 cases.<\/p>\n<p>World record holders\u00a0<strong>Lilly King\u00a0<\/strong>and <strong>Katie Ledecky\u00a0<\/strong>have been struggling to find adequate training facilities while their usual pools have been shut down, according to <em>The USA Today<\/em>. Both have found space in backyard pools in their respective states as both are looking to defend their Olympic gold medals from 2016. Ledecky is going for an unprecedented third straight gold in the 800 as well as the inaugural gold in the 1500, while King is searching to be the first woman to defend the 100 breast Olympic gold.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Allison Schmitt<\/strong>, who is pushing for what would be her fourth Olympics, has been swimming for 45 minutes a day about three days per week in Phoenix.
