Bick<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/olympic-silver-medalist-pieter-timmers-to-retire-before-2021-olympics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>By Matthew De George<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>An extra year until the Tokyo Olympics was too much to wait for Belgian\u00a0<strong>Pieter Timmers.<\/strong>\u00a0The silver medalist in the 100 freestyle\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/olympic-swimming-medalist-decides-not-193550556.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">announced Thursday<\/a>\u00a0via the Belgian Swimming Federation that he will retire at the end of 2020 and not pursue the Tokyo Olympics next summer.<\/p>\n<p>Timmers spoke\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zwemfed.be\/nieuws\/pieter-timmers-niet-naar-tokio-2021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">to the Belgian federation explaining his decision<\/a>\u00a0and did a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/B_CcVq6HQ90\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">television appearance Thursday<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Pieter Timmers was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/kyle-chalmers-downs-100-free-world-junior-record-takes-home-olympic-gold\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a surprise medalist in the 100 free in Rio<\/a>, beating London Olympic champion\u00a0<strong>Nathan Adrian<\/strong>\u00a0to second place behind Australian gold medalist\u00a0<strong>Kyle Chalmers.<\/strong>\u00a0Timmers, who entered the Rio Games ranked 35th in the world in the event, lowered the national record to 47.80 and became the first Belgian swimming medalist at the Olympics since 1996 (<strong>Fred Deburghgraeve<\/strong>). He also helped Belgium make the finals of the 400 and 800 free relays. People will be coming from hundreds of nations \u2026 and although\u00a0Japan\u00a0might have the disease under control by next summer, I don\u2019t think that will be the case everywhere.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He spoke as the number of infections approach 11,000, with 236 deaths, reported domestically but the number of cases globally set to past the 2.5 million mark, with more than 165,000 people having lost their lives, more than 40,000 of those now in the United States. So the U.S. is piloting virtual doping tests, and high-profile swimmers are at the forefront of the program.<\/p>\n<p>The experiment of remote sample collection was tested starting two weeks ago by the\u00a0<strong>U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA)<\/strong>, removing the need for in-person contact with doping control officers.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<em>New York Times<\/em>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/04\/15\/sports\/olympics\/coronavirus-drug-testing.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">described the 10-step protocol<\/a>, which begins with the USADA mailing a testing kit to athletes and ends with the athletes sending blood and urine samples back. During a specified testing window, the athlete communicates with a tester by video call, to witness the signature on documents and virtually inspect the bathroom in which the urine sample will be supplied.<\/p>\n<p>Athletes then, off camera, provide a urine sample that is verified via a temperature strip on video and sealed. A device in the kit also allows the athlete to draw a blood sample for testing, which is then sealed (on video) in the package.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Katie Ledecky<\/strong>, along with track and field athletes\u00a0<strong>Noah Lyles, Allyson Felix, Emma Coburn<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Aliphine Tuliamuk,<\/strong>\u00a0were among more than a dozen athletes to volunteer for the program, USADA CEO\u00a0<strong>Travis Tygart<\/strong>\u00a0told the\u00a0<em>Times.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was happy to sign on for this,\u201d Ledecky said. \u201cI felt very comfortable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lilly King<\/strong>, a noted proponent for clean sport who\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/olympics.nbcsports.com\/2019\/07\/23\/lilly-king-yulia-efimova-world-swimming-championships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">has chided rivals like<\/a>\u00a0Russian\u00a0<strong>Yulia Efimova<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Sun Yang<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/lilly-king-slams-fina-for-allowing-sun-yang-to-race-pending-cas-anti-doping-process\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">for doping violations<\/a>, also signed on to the virtual doping tests.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHonestly, I was a little skeptical of it at first,\u201d King\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/sports\/columnist\/brennan\/2020\/04\/15\/olympics-drug-testing-usada-unveils-unprecedented-virtual-drug-test\/2992275001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">told\u00a0<em>USA Today<\/em><\/a>. \u201cThen after I did my first test, I think they really thought through all the potential loopholes with the testing.
