{"id":427878,"date":"2020-04-18T13:49:53","date_gmt":"2020-04-18T20:49:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=427878"},"modified":"2020-04-21T16:34:17","modified_gmt":"2020-04-21T23:34:17","slug":"lukman-niode-1984-olympian-who-tested-positive-for-covid-19-dies-at-56","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/lukman-niode-1984-olympian-who-tested-positive-for-covid-19-dies-at-56\/","title":{"rendered":"Passages: Lukman Niode, 1984 Olympian Who Tested Positive for COVID-19, Dies at 56"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Lukman Niode<\/strong>, a 1984 Olympian from Indonesia died on Friday at age 56 after testing positive for COVID-19, though the cause of death has not been officially released, according to news outlets.<\/p>\n<p>Niode was a nine-time Southeast Asia Gold Medalist in the backstroke events.<\/p>\n<p>His death was announced by the Indonesian Swimming Federation (PRSI), which paid tribute to its former official, coach and team manager on Facebook, saying that &#8220;the world of sports and aquatics Indonesia has lost one of its best sons,&#8221; according to <em>The Straits Times<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>According to reports, fellow national swimmer <strong>Richard Sam Bera<\/strong> said on Facebook that Lukman had been in an induced coma in the intensive care unit of Pelni Hospital, before his death on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Lukman reached the biggest stage in swimming at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, swimming in the 100 freestyle, 100 backstroke and 200 backstroke events for his country.<\/p>\n<p>Former swimmer <strong>Oon Jin Teik<\/strong>, who also competed at the 1984 Olympics, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/sport\/spore-swimming-legends-pay-tribute-to-late-rival-and-friend-indonesias-lukman-niode\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Straits Times<\/a> how he and Lukman became friends.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Lukie was a talented sportsman and a real gentleman,&#8221; Oon said.\u00a0&#8220;After retiring from swimming, we became friends who helped each other in promoting sports. I used to share much about Singapore swimming and Singapore Sports Hub with him, knowing that he had a single mission to uplift the level of Indonesian sports.
