Tokyo 2020 CEO Toshiro Muto<\/strong> admits there are no guarantees that the rescheduled Olympic Games will go ahead as planned next year as the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic continues to wreak havoc across the world.<\/p>\n

The International Olympic Committee postponed the Games<\/a> for the first time in their history last month as the death toll rose daily.<\/p>\n

Olympic trials worldwide and sports events were cancelled and lockdown in many countries meant there was no access to training facilities and postponement was inevitable.<\/p>\n

The IOC then announced the Games would take place<\/a> from\u00a0 23 July-8 August, a delay of a year minus one day, with\u00a0 the Paralympic Games<\/strong>\u00a0also announced as running from 24 August until 5 September 2021.<\/p>\n

At the time Japan was pretty much carrying on as normal with four-time Olympic champion Kosuke Kitajima<\/strong> telling Swimming World in an exclusive interview<\/a> that he was “a little bit sceptical as to whether people in Tokyo really understand about this virus.”<\/p>\n

A state of emergency was declared on Wednesday accompanied by a partial lockdown although many restaurants and bars remained open.<\/p>\n

Currently Japan have reported roughly 5,000 cases with 100 deaths.<\/p>\n

Now, Muto admits he cannot provide any guarantees that the Tokyo 2020 Olympics will start on 23 July 2021 as planned.<\/p>\n

In a remote teleconference reported by the Associated Press<\/a>, Muto spoke through a translator, saying:<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think anyone would be able to say if it is going to be possible to get it under control by next July or not.<\/p>\n

\u201dWe\u2019re certainly are not in a position to give you a clear answer.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

He added:<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have made the decision to postpone the games by one year. So this means that all we can do is work hard to prepare for the games. We sincerely hope that come next year mankind will manage to overcome the coronavirus crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Of whether there is an alternative should the pandemic wreak more havoc with the Games with fears of a second wave of Covid-19, Muto said:<\/p>\n
