In her second career, it\u2019s former teammates that are helping her.<\/p>\n<p>Thompson works as an anesthesiologist at a hospital in Charleston, S.C. When she grew concerned about a shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE) for healthcare workers during the coronavirus pandemic, former swimming teammates <strong>Gabrielle Rose<\/strong> and <strong>Lea Maurer<\/strong> stepped up to help.<\/p>\n<p>Through a GoFundMe page titled, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gofundme.com\/f\/go-jenny-go\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Go Jenny Go<\/a>,\u201d the group was able to raise more than $9,000, enough to secure PPE for Thompson and her staff and make a $1,000 donation to New York City healthcare workers battling one of the biggest COVID-19 outbreaks in the country.<\/p>\n<p>Though the fundraiser is closed, the page redirects to other campaigns and organizations that people can give to.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople were responding and donating from all chapters of my life,\u201d Thompson <a href=\"https:\/\/olympics.nbcsports.com\/2020\/04\/03\/jenny-thompson-doctor-swimming-coronavirus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">told NBC Sports\u2019 Nick Zaccardi<\/a>. \u201cPeople I didn\u2019t even know. Family from USA Swimming and international swimming. It\u2019s really touched me to know that so many people care and are able to donate, help share the message.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thompson swam in four Olympics \u2013 1992, 1996, 2000 and 2004. The Stanford University graduate won 12 Olympic medals, including eight gold (all in relays), one of the most decorated female Olympians in history and <a href=\"https:\/\/ishof.org\/jenny-thompson-(usa).html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">an International Swimming Hall of Fame inductee<\/a>. After retiring, she finished her medical degree from Columbia University, starting her studies just weeks before September 11 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/exclusive-jenny-thompson-to-make-comeback\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">swimming in her last Olympics while in med school<\/a>. Her internship was at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, one of the hospitals now dealing with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzfeednews.com\/article\/rosalindadams\/a-top-cancer-hospital-faces-mask-shortages-as-covid-19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the most severe influx of patients and shortages of supplies<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>When Thompson told her friends \u2013 Rose, a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gabrielle_Rose_(swimmer)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stanford grad who represented Brazil<\/a> at the 1996 and 2000 games, and Maurer, who won bronze in the 100 back and relay gold at the Barcelona Games before <a href=\"https:\/\/gostanford.com\/sports\/mens-water-polo\/roster\/coaches\/lea-maurer\/3694\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">returning to Stanford to coach<\/a> \u2013 about the shortages, they turned to the internet to help.<\/p>\n<p>With Thompson assured that her team in South Carolina, where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scdhec.gov\/coronavirus-disease-2019-covid-19\/overview-covid-19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the outbreak hasn\u2019t peaked yet<\/a>, were adequately equipped, she turned the team\u2019s fundraising muscle toward other areas more hard hit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve been fortunate [in South Carolina]. I feel lucky,\u201d Thompson said. \u201cWe\u2019ll definitely be in a place where we\u2019re taking care of a lot of Covid patients, but we\u2019re not there yet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve heard people say, people in healthcare knew what they were signing up for. I never signed up to get sick and potentially die from this job.
