﻿{"id":425228,"date":"2020-03-31T22:08:07","date_gmt":"2020-04-01T05:08:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=425228"},"modified":"2024-10-28T11:52:21","modified_gmt":"2024-10-28T18:52:21","slug":"canada-calls-on-fina-wps-to-shunt-world-titles-all-other-2021-events-to-2022","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/canada-calls-on-fina-wps-to-shunt-world-titles-all-other-2021-events-to-2022\/","title":{"rendered":"Canada Calls On FINA &#038; WPS To Shunt World Titles &#038; All Other 2021 Events To 2022"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Canada<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/canada-will-not-send-athletes-to-2020-olympics-steps-up-postponement-pressure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">which triggered a chain reaction to get the Olympic Games moved to 2021 as the first nation to declare that it would not send a team to Tokyo 2o20 this July<\/a>, has called on FINA to shunt the <strong>Fukuoka 2021 World Championships<\/strong> and all other events to 2022.<\/p>\n<p>The same message has been sent to World Para Swimming, while\u00a0<strong>Swimming Canada<\/strong> has also announced that it will not send a team to the 2020 World Junior Open Water Championships in the Seychelles this August.<\/p>\n<p>The federation, which has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/swimming-canada-cancels-summer-swim-season-through-august-in-coronavirus-crunch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">already cancelled the whole of the summer season 2020 through August<\/a>, welcomed the new 2021 dates for the Tokyo Olympic Games as &#8220;great news&#8221; that would help swimmers, coaches and programs plan properly.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/the-week-that-was-canada-will-not-send-team-to-tokyo-2020-puts-pressure-on-ioc-to-make-decision\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Canada having won praise for its stance on Tokyo 2020<\/a>, the swim federation now explains why it it in favour of FINA and World Para Swimming moving all their respective 2021 world championships to 2022 &#8220;for a variety of reasons&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>As things stand, there is talk of holding the Fukuoka World titles immediately ion the back of the Olympic Games next year, in August. If that could work well on a financial and organisational level, on a performance level it leaves world-class programs shaking their heads. As Swimming World has already noted, for a distance freestyle swimmer \u00a0such as double World champion <strong>Florian Wellbrock<\/strong>, of Germany, it would mean:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Week 1: 800, 1500m free debut \u00a0at the Olympic Games<\/li>\n<li>Week 2: Olympic marathon debut<\/li>\n<li>Week 3\/4: World 10km (marathon) title defence<\/li>\n<li>Week 4\/5: 800m and defence of World 1500m title<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In a statement,<strong> John Atkinson, head of performance at Swimming Canada<\/strong>, noted:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #808080;\">\u201cHaving the two premier Games and championships staged close together in the same year would create many challenges. From budgets to program planning, to timing, to the risks of athletes being overloaded, there are so many unknowns. As we continue to navigate the uncertainty of this current global situation, we encourage FINA and World Para Swimming to choose 2022 as the best alternative for the world championships.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>On Swimming Canada&#8217;s decision not to attend the 2020 FINA World Junior Open Water Championships Aug. 21-23 in Victoria, Seychelles, he said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><strong>\u201cWhile we understand this is another disappointing decision for our athletes, the event falls in the period when other events have been cancelled or postponed because of the world situation with swimmers unable to train due to the measures in place to fight the COVID-19 pandemic. We hope to plan and announce new activities for those swimmers in the fall.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Atkinson&#8217;s former boss at British Swimming, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/prioritise-the-olympics-the-only-competition-that-matters-says-swim-elder-sweetenham\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Bill Sweetenham<\/strong>, told Swimming World on Monday that the current re-scheduling of international events offered the sport a chance to reinvent the sporting calendar<\/a> and remove the current chaos and clutter of events:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cFor me, this is a chance and opportunity to put a new system of global competition. And \u2013 No Sacred COWS!. The IOC could show some really great innovative leadership and stage a conference via the internet, no travel required, with ALL competition stakeholders and clients to come up with a fully integrated global competition plan and schedule\/calendar that all can support and have confidence in and sign on.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere should be no isolation of objectives other than providing the absolute best opportunity for all athletes. Buy in from ALL stakeholders would provide global swimming with a distinct advantage. We desperately need a global-leadership and direction-based strategy.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>The statement in full, English and French Canadian<\/h3>\n<p>OTTAWA \u2013 Swimming Canada welcomes the news of new confirmed dates for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games to be held in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>With the announcement that the Olympic Games will be held July 23 \u2013 Aug. 8, 2021, followed by the Paralympic Games Aug. 24 \u2013 Sept. 5, the organization is adjusting its high performance plans with those dates in mind.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is great news to get the dates for the Olympic and Paralympic Games so quickly,\u201d said Swimming Canada CEO Ahmed El-Awadi. \u201cThis will help our organization begin to prepare.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With the 2021 FINA World Championships originally scheduled for July 16 \u2013 Aug. 1 in Fukuoka, Japan, Swimming Canada expects further announcements to clarify the world competition calendar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are still more dates to be set but we know FINA just received the news as well and they need time to work with their partners and stakeholders to find a suitable time for the world championships as do many other international federations,\u201d El-Awadi said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is great news,\u201d added High Performance Director and National Coach John Atkinson. \u201cWe have already been planning for what the rest of 2020 and the 2021 plans will look like, and we look forward to sharing more detail in the coming weeks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Atkinson has encouraged all swimmers, coaches and support staff to continue to follow all government guidelines with regard to social distancing, instructing athletes to train at home, on their own, under the advice of their coaches and\/or other qualified experts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe fully support this stance,\u201d Atkinson said. \u201cIn time it will be great to have plans in place to give our athletes and coaches from both the Olympic and Paralympic programs something to focus on. Before we can get to the detail we are now waiting for FINA to announce the revised Olympic qualification process for both the pool and the open water marathon swimming events. We are also looking to the International Paralympic Committee\/World Para Swimming to review their process with regard to classification and events. Des budgets \u00e0 la planification des programmes, \u00e0 la coordination jusqu\u2019aux surcharges possibles que les athl\u00e8tes risqueraient de subir, il y a plusieurs inconnus. M\u00eame si nous continuons de composer avec l\u2019incertitude de la situation mondiale actuelle, nous encourageons la FINA et la World Para Swimming \u00e0 consid\u00e9rer la tenue des championnats du monde en 2022 comme la meilleure solution. \u00bb<\/p>\n<p>Natation Canada a \u00e9galement d\u00e9cid\u00e9 de ne pas participer aux Championnats du monde juniors en eau libre 2020 de la FINA qui devaient se tenir du 21 au 23 aout \u00e0 Victoria, aux Seychelles.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab Bien que nous soyons conscients qu\u2019il s\u2019agit d\u2019une autre d\u00e9cision d\u00e9cevante pour nos athl\u00e8tes, cet \u00e9v\u00e8nement se d\u00e9roule \u00e0 la p\u00e9riode durant laquelle d\u2019autres \u00e9v\u00e8nements ont \u00e9t\u00e9 annul\u00e9s ou report\u00e9s en raison de la situation mondiale qui emp\u00eache les athl\u00e8tes de s\u2019entrainer \u00e9tant donn\u00e9 les mesures prises pour lutter contre la pand\u00e9mie de la COVID-19, souligne Atkinson.
