The tardiness of the \u00a0event was in part because the federation had originally planned to be awarded during the 2020 Open championships, which were cancelled last month due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>In an innovative awards ceremony, Swimming New Zealand, announced the winners via Facebook (watch below) with 20-year-old 2019 Gwangju World Championship bronze medallist Clareburt taking out back-to-back Swimmer of the year awards.<\/p>\n<p>Clareburt became only the fifth Kiwi to win a FINA World Championship medal, with his stirring 400IM bronze, which prompted his &#8220;Silver Fern&#8221; team mates to greet him with the traditional Maori Haka when he returned to the warm down pool.<\/p>\n<p>The Wellington native joined <strong>Gary Hurring<\/strong> (1978), <strong>Anthony Mosse<\/strong> (1986), <strong>Danyon Loader<\/strong> (1994) and<strong> Lauren Boyle<\/strong> (2013, 2015) as the only Kiwis to stand on a World Championship podium.<\/p>\n<p>Mosse (1988) and Loader (1992 and 1996) went on to win Olympic medals &#8211; Loader double gold in the 200 and 400m freestyle in Atlanta.<\/p>\n<p>The gracious youngster, who turns 21 in July and has the swimming world at his feet, accepted his awards saying:\u00a0<em>\u201cI\u2019m super stoked to win the Swimming New Zealand overall swimmer of the year and I just want to congratulate the other finalists <strong>Erika Fairweather<\/strong> and <strong>Sophie Pascoe<\/strong> and also want to congratulate all my competitors in NZ.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Earlier he was named International Swimmer Award, saying: <em>\u201cIt\u2019s a huge honor, 2019 was a pretty incredible year for me\u2026.going to the world championships and picking up a bronze medal\u2026I guess that\u2019s testament to the team that sits behind me\u2026.and supports me every day, from my coach <strong>Gary Hollywood,<\/strong> my parents, my training partners, High Performance Sport New Zealand and all my sponsors\u2026a huge thank you from me\u2026.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Swimming New Zealand&#8217;s 2019 Award Winners<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Para Swimmer of the Year:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Sophie Pascoe<br \/>\n<strong>Domestic Swimmer of the Year:<\/strong>\u00a0Helena Gasson &amp; However, the restrictions are currently in place for a very important reason and we\u2019d urge all our members to ensure they abide by the Government guidelines, stay at home and avoid public gatherings to help combat the spread of coronavirus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are working on a number of training plans which will cover psychology, coaching, nutrition, lifestyle plus strength and conditioning to ensure our athletes across all our disciplines can stay fit and healthy \u2013 both mentally and physically \u2013 without having to leave their homes. However, an organisation such as FIN does not have mortgage payments, its funding stemming from state subsidies, membership and sponsorship and event revenue that has dried up.<\/p>\n<p>Barelli has <strong>Liffey Swim<\/strong> in Dublin, the capital of the Republic of Ireland, and has also provided an essential service as an Aer Lingus pilot, ensuring healthcare workers have vital personal
