THE University of Florida women's and men's swimming-diving teams made it two-for-two in victories so far this young
season by sweeping intra-state foe, Indian River Community College, at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center Natatorium here this afternoon.

Coach Greg Troy's Lady Gators won, 167-107, while the men cruised to a 170-117 victory. It was UF's second-consecutive sweep; last weekend Florida opened at home by defeating Southeast Conference foe Louisiana State
on both the women's and men's side.

Today's meet was highlighted by a pair of Florida records in the diving portion and another women's NCAA automatic qualifying standard. Froshwoman Jessica Ranieri (Huntington Valley, PA) broke Florida's one-meter springboard school-record with 296.40 points. The old mark was held by former Gator Heather Lawrence, when she scored 295.20 in 1998. Ranieri won
both diving events, scoring 299.39 on the three-meter springboard.

Junior Sara McLarty (Deland, FL) swam an NCAA automatic qualifying time for the second-consecutive meet, splashing to a nation-leading 4:14.80 400
individual medley. In the LSU dual, McLarty swam an NCAA automatic 16:07.25 for the 1650 free. That time is not far off her pr of 16:06.63 that earned her the bronze medal at last season's NCAA Championships.

McLarty won the mile at SECS last year (16:12+) and has a 400 IM pr of 4:12.42 from the 2001 NCAAs at Texas. She has a ways to go, however, before she's ready to take on the Gator records in these two events. The 1650 standard is 15:50.86 by Tami Bruce from 16 years ago, a swim that still ranks her eighth and 12th, respectively, on the all-time performers -performances list.

Ihe Gator 400 IM record is an even tougher standard, 4:07.75, by the incomparable Tracy Caulkins from the 1984 NCAAs. Interestingly, Caulkins' pr was a 4:04.63 that she swam three years earlier during the U.S. Nationals at Harvard. That time was then the American record and lasted for more than a decade, until Stanford star Summer Sanders went the current
American/NCAA record of 4:02.28 at the '92 NCAAs. also at Texas.

Caulkins' Cambridge effort is still No. 2 all-time (perfomer-performance). Her 4:07.75 is 16th all-time (performances).

Think TC was just slightly ahead of her time?

McLarty also swam an NCAA provisional cut in the 200 butterfly, winning in 2:01.47.

Eight other Gators won too.

*   *    *    *     *

On the men's side, the Gators were led by sophomore diver Zach Wilcox (Yarrow Point, WA.), who qualified for NCAA Diving Zones next spring on both the one- and three-meter boards. Wilcox's total of 374.17 in the three-meter broke his school-record of 369.22 set last season. It was the second-consecutive week Wilcox qualified for the diving zones in both events.

"As a team, we had a pretty solid day," said diving coach Donnie Craine. "You don't really have many complaints when two divers break school records."

Several men's swimmers turned in terrific efforts as two swimmers earned their first victories of the season and their career. Junior Scott Schultz (Ft. Lauderdale), who returned from knee surgery this past summer, won the 100 freestyle in 46.95. Freshman Brian Hartley (Indianapolis) picked up his first collegiate win by taking first in the 500 freestyle (4:37.21).

Junior Carlos Jayme (Goias, Brazil) won his third different race in two weeks. this time the 200 free (1:40.37). Against LSU, Jayme won the 50 and 100 frees.

"A lot of guys swam well today," Troy said. "They are swimming pretty well as a team for this early in the season."

Camilo Becerra turned in Indian River's top performance, winning the 100 fly in 49.56.

— Bill Bell

NCAA DIVISION 1 WOMEN'S & MEN'S DUAL MEET
FLORIDA VS.
