In her professional life, she\u2019s a leader in the fight against coronavirus in the New York metro area.<\/p>\n<p>English, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.onlineathens.com\/sports\/20200326\/former-bulldog-swimmer-on-frontline-against-coronavirus-in-new-york-hospital\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">profiled by the Athens Banner-Herald<\/a>, works as a neurology nurse at New York-Presbyterian\/Columbia University Medical Center in Manhattan, near <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/03\/28\/nyregion\/nyc-coronavirus-ems.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the epicenter of one of the United States\u2019 most severe COVID-19 outbreaks<\/a>. Though her specialty involves audiology and speech pathology, the sports studies major is also chipping in to what is becoming <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/03\/25\/nyregion\/nyc-coronavirus-hospitals.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">an all-hands-on-deck scenario<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRight now, that is what we\u2019re dealing with,\u201d English said. \u201cThis is what we have in our country. We have this crisis. I don\u2019t think any health care worker is not faced with working with these patients. We\u2019re in it. Even though I\u2019m in neurology, that\u2019s what I\u2019m focused on right now. You don\u2019t have a specialty at this point. Your goal is to help with this pandemic and to help society.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>English <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nmnathletics.com\/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=8800&amp;ATCLID=1264936\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">swam for Georgia from 2008-12<\/a>, including an injury redshirt year. The native of Lincoln Park, N.J., was an honorable mention All-American in 2011 and a regular at SECs, the sprinter and backstroker a valuable cog in the Bulldogs\u2019 relay rotation. She once held the U.S. Open <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/english-comes-close-to-u-s-open-record-in-50-lcm-back-at-missouri-grand-prix\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">record in the 50-meter backstroke<\/a> and competed at the 2006 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ito-upsets-coughlin-in-100-back-at-pan-pacs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pan Pacific Championships<\/a> and 2007 World University Games.<\/p>\n<p>Both English and Georgia coach <strong>Jack Bauerle<\/strong> fondly remember their time as pupil and coach.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey wanted to see the best in you,\u201d English said. \u201cThat\u2019s why many people go to Georgia and seek out that program because it\u2019s not a program where they leave you. &#8230;They still keep in touch with me and they\u2019re still very much a part of my life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe race I can remember most for her is she could barely get her shoulder moving and she laid it down for us,\u201d Bauerle said. \u201cI like kids with an edge and she had it. She was a competitor and I\u2019m sure she is the same way now in her job. She\u2019s a tough person and I think that\u2019s who we need up there right now.
