It is a tale of human experience that most of us pray may never come to visit our lives.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>When I saw Nakache&#8217;s name on the ballot paper for Class of 2019 induction to the <strong>International Swimming Hall of Fame<\/strong>, the instant tick in the box alongside his name as a member of the selection committee was a no brainer.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>He was a man who was said to &#8220;walk like Charlie Chaplin and laugh like Henri Salvador&#8221;. Nakache raced in front of Hitler at the 1936 Games, broke the world 200m record in 1941 but in 1943 was arrested by the Gestapo as a Jew and taken to the Auschwitz concentration camp.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Born in Constantine, Algeria, on November 18, 1915, Nakache became known as the \u201cSwimmer of Auschwitz&#8221;. His wife and 2-year-old daughter Annie died in a gas chamber there. Nakache managed to swim while at Auschwitz; in the camp water tanks. After surviving the camp, Nakache raced at the 1948 Games: no longer the man he once was, he was eliminated in the semis.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>In June this year, the new\u00a0<b>Alfred-Nakache Pool <\/b>\u00a0is due to open in Sauvian. The coronavirus pandemic may put cause a delay. Nakache would be the first to advocate patience, a time of healing and renewal, an acceptance that the long game is sometimes the only game that matters if the game is to go on at all.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Among the many references to Nakache down the years, here are two standouts on video, the first 50-minute\u00a0documentary of his life &#8211; <em><strong>Alfred Nakache, the Swimmer of Auschwitz, 2001<\/strong><\/em> &#8211;\u00a0featuring the splendid journalist \u00a0<strong>Eric Lahmy<\/strong>, whose words graced the pages of <em>L&#8217;Equipe<\/em> for many a long year. The second is the video made to mark Nakache&#8217;s Hall of Fame induction, complete with the contributions of the French delegation that made the trip to Fort Lauderdale a year ago to celebrate the life of a man second to none when it came to overcoming crushing experience by somehow managing to find a way through, a way of going on, a way of celebrating life and striving for the best you can be in the midst of monstrous circumstances.<\/div>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=CxwWa8XgbPo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Watch The French Documentary<\/a><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong>The ISHOF Induction<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_p8QMe1LxKM\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Laure Manaudou<\/strong> and her former boyfriend <strong>Fred Bousquet<\/strong>, French swimmers who have a daughter together, were to have starred in a film of Nakache&#8217;s story. The news was revealed in 2009 by<em>\u00a0L&#8217;Equipe<\/em>, with <strong>Jean Bodon<\/strong>, a professor at the University of Alabama, the brain behind the production. The project did not proceed, in part due to a lack of funding, according to the French sports newspaper.<\/p>\n<p>A water polo player as well as swimmer, Nakache was posthumously inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame as a member of the\u00a0Class of 2019 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, May 18, 2019.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">The Story Of Alfred &#8216;Artem&#8217; Nakache<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>with contributions from Meg-Keller Marvin and Andy Ross<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The name of <strong>Mark Spitz<\/strong> with his unprecedented seven gold medals and seven world records at the 1972 Munich Olympic Games stands out above all other achievements in Jewish sports history, but the title for the first great Jewish &#8216;butterfly&#8217; swimmer, belongs to another &#8211; albeit from a time when butterfly was just a part of breaststroke, the fourth stroke yet to be born.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Alfred Nakache<\/strong>, born Nov. 18, 1915 in Constantine, French Algeria, was one of only two Jewish Olympians to compete in the Olympic Games after surviving a concentration camp during the Holocaust.<\/p>\n<p>The Nakache family arrived in French Algeria from Iraq in the late 19th century to settle in the beautiful valley overlooking the Rhummel River. Alfred was the second of 11 children, and at about the age of 10, he learned to overcome his fear of water and began to swim.<\/p>\n<p>Alfred (nicknamed Artem) was described as having\u00a0\u201cshoulders lined with hard and protruding muscles\u201d and \u201cgymnast\u2019s arms and legs rather than a swimmer\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But a swimmer he was. He was a member of the Nautical Youth Club of Constantine until 1934, and after a few local competitions he caught up with the idea that if he put more effort in he could win beyond his back yard pool.<\/p>\n<p>Come 1933, he was racing at the French Championships. He moved to Paris at the end of the summer that year as the newly elected\u00a0Nazis across the border in Germany published the first of the four lists of people whose German citizenship, passports and other privileges were withdrawn.<\/p>\n<p>On the first list of Thirty-three names, were the Jewish authors <a title=\"Heinrich Mann\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Heinrich_Mann\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Heinrich Mann<\/a>, <a title=\"Lion Feuchtwanger\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lion_Feuchtwanger\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lion Feuchtwanger<\/a>, <a title=\"Ernst Toller\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ernst_Toller\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ernst Toller<\/a> and <a title=\"Kurt Tucholsky\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kurt_Tucholsky\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kurt Tucholsky<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Between August 30 and September 3 of that year, the <a title=\"Nuremberg Rally\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nuremberg_Rally\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">5th Nazi Party Congress<\/a>\u00a0was held in Nuremberg. Hitler and Co call it the &#8220;Rally of Victory&#8221; (<i>Reichsparteitag des Sieges<\/i>) in reference to the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Machtergreifung\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Machtergreifung\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nazi seizure of power.<\/a><sup id=\"cite_ref-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Come October 16, 1933,\u00a0Germany announces its intention to officially leave the League of Nations, a\u00a0history that reminds us to pay attention to events unfolding in our own time.<\/p>\n<p>At the French Championships in 1934, Nakache placed second in the 100m freestyle to his idol, French swimmer <strong>Jean Taris<\/strong>, who had claimed silver in the 400m freestyle at the 1932 Olympic Games in Los Angeles just 0.1sec behind American movie-star-to-be\u00a0<strong>Buster Crabbe<\/strong>, on 4:48.4.<\/p>\n<p>Nakache was unable to race for France at the 1934 European Championships in Magdeburg because he was not yet eligible as a Frenchman, \u201chaving not been born on French soil\u201d, as newspaper reports of the time note. Even so, 1934 saw him become a licensed member of The Racing Club de France, the club he raced for until 1936 at a time he was a pupil at the prestigious Lyc\u00e9e Janson-de-Sailly in Paris.<\/p>\n<p>In 1935, Nakache claimed the French 100m freestyle title and was one of 1,000 Jewish athletes who traveled to Tel Aviv to attend the second annual Maccabiah Games. In front of Hitler at a Berlin Games soaked in swastikas with the acceptance of the International Olympic Committee, Nakache finished fourth in the 4\u00d7200 freestyle relay with teammates <strong>Christian Talli<\/strong>, <strong>Ren\u00e9 Cavalero<\/strong> and <strong>Jean Taris<\/strong>, missing the bronze medal by six seconds. They may not have made the podium, but they had the pleasure of beating the Germans (who finished fifth) in their home country, 9:18.2 to 9:19.0. Japan won the event that year with a world record of 8:51.5.<\/p>\n<p>Upon his return home, due to the conflict with Germany, he was forced to interrupt his studies at the Normal School of Physical Education and flee Paris with his wife, <strong>Paule<\/strong>, and daughter, <strong>Annie<\/strong>. They become refugees in Toulouse during the German occupation. As a Jew from Algeria, Albert Nakache lost his French nationality.<\/p>\n<p>Between 1936 and 1944, Nakache won the French 100 freestyle six times, the 200 free four times, the 200 breaststroke four times and an assortment of other French swimming titles, many of them setting national records.<\/p>\n<p>Between 1935 and 1938, Nakache practiced the new butterfly-breaststroke, a version of the stroke that would lead to the birth of butterfly and 1954 breaststroke rules forbidding overarm recovery. Racing for the prestigious TOEC Dauphins swim club in Toulouse, he broke records in France as well as all over Europe. On July 6 of that yea &#8211; in the seawater pool of the Catalans in Marseille &#8211; Nakache broke the world record in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:36.8, bettering American<strong> Jack Kasley<\/strong>\u2019s record of 2:37.2, set in 1936. Nakache\u2019s record lasted for five years, and was finally broken by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ishof.org\/joe-verdeur-(usa).html\"> <strong>Joe Verdeur<\/strong><\/a> of the USA\u00a0(2:35.6, 1946).<\/p>\n<p>In 1941 and 1942 Nakache won six French National titles, one claimed in Marseille taking down\u00a0<strong>Kasley&#8217;s world record <\/strong>and the European record of<strong> Joachim Balke<\/strong>,\u00a0the\u00a0German champion and seventh-place finisher over 200m at a home 1936 Olympic Games.<\/p>\n<p>Balke&#8217;s European 100m record also fell to Nakache that summer, in 1:09.4 in Toulouse in June. At the time, a French journalist wrote:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cThe Jew Nakache should not be allowed to hold any European titles because he is Jewish.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The following year, the European Championships were cancelled at the height of war but Nakache clocked a 1:08.6 European 100m breaststroke record back in Toulouse in February 1942. It would be the last record of a career that would end in tragic circumstances before being reborn beyond the War.<\/p>\n<p>During this time, Nakache began approaching the Jewish resistance networks, such as the Arm\u00e9e Juive (Jewish Army), mainly by helping with the physical preparation of the recruits.<\/p>\n<p>Anti-Semitic persecution intensified all over Europe, and on August 26, 1942, nearly 1,000 Jews were rounded up in Toulouse. The media was split in their support for Nakache.<\/p>\n<p>While some welcomed his swimming and the records broken by Nakache, others called for his exclusion from national competitions because of his \u201cJewishness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The French Swimming Federation finally gave in to the pressure from the Germans, and banned Alfred Nakache from swimming in the 1943 national championships. That decision remains a source of shame for the FFN to this day.<\/p>\n<p>At the time of his records, the Nazis occupied France, and he fought against their claim that \u201cthe Jew Nakache\u2026polluted the waters of French pools!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the early part of the 1940\u2019s as the Nazi occupation of France took hold, Nakache was forced to flee to Toulouse, into the unoccupied \u201cFree Zone\u201d, with his new wife Paule. There he was welcomed like a son by two historical figures of French swimming, coach <strong>Alban Minville<\/strong> and <strong>Jules Jany<\/strong>. The sign above the gate, <\/a><em>&#8220;Arbeit Macht Frei&#8221; &#8211; Work sets you free &#8211;<\/em> would play out in a macabre way in Nakache&#8217;s life.<\/p>\n<p>His wife and 2-year old daughter were murdered by the Nazis upon their arrival in Germany. Of the 1,368 men, women and children in their death camp convoy, only 47 survived.<\/p>\n<p>Nakache was &#8217;employed&#8217; by the Nazis to help with its \u00a0camp fitness regime. He was caught swimming in one of the water tanks, so the camp guards punished him by insisting he swim every day, including at times when it was snowing an ice formed on the surface of the water.<\/p>\n<p>Toward the end of the War, Alfred was moved to another concentration camp, Buchenwald, and in 1945 was freed by the Allies. Nakache was one of the 47 survivors of this camp, weighing only 42 kg (92 pounds) at the time.<\/p>\n<p>Four months later, he returned to Toulouse to live with <strong>Alex Jany<\/strong> and his family, where he started training under Coach <strong>Alban Minville<\/strong>. Less than a year after the liberation of Buchenwald, he was part of the French team in 1946 that set a world record in the 3\u00d7100 relay (3 strokes). After swimming concluded, he was a member of the French water polo team that finished in sixth place overall.<\/p>\n<p>As far as is known, he was one of only two Jewish athletes who competed in the Olympics after surviving the Holocaust.<\/p>\n<p>Nakache retired from swimming in the early 1950s and devoted himself to his gym and teaching. In addition, hehelped train 1952 Olympic champion Jean Boiteux. With his long over-due induction, Nakache will forever bereunited with his idol, Jean Taris, his coach Alban Minville and world-record setting relay teammates,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ishof.org\/georges-vallerey%2c-jr.html\"><strong>Georges Vallerey<\/strong><\/a> and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ishof.org\/alex-jany--(fra).html\"><strong>Alex Jany<\/strong><\/a>, into the International Swimming Hall of Fame.<\/p>\n<p>Nakache retired from swimming in the 1950s and devoted himself to his gym and teaching. He also remarried a young girl, <strong>Mary<\/strong>, from Sete.
