The Olympics of 1916, 1940 and 1944 were cancelled owing to the First and Second World Wars.<\/p>\n<p>The Games will remain as Tokyo 2020 in brand and name in Tokyo 2021.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe<\/strong> had earlier confirmed plans for a one-year delay to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games to summer 2021. In a short address to the Japanese media, he also said that <strong>Thomas Bach<\/strong>, the head of the <strong>International Olympic Committee (IOC)<\/strong> was in &#8220;100% agreement&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The Japanese leader\u00a0told the Japanese media before a joint IOC\/Tokyo 2020 statement was issued (in full below):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I proposed to postpone for about a year and [IOC] president Thomas Bach responded with 100% agreement.\u00a0This will make it possible for athletes to play in the best condition, and will make the event a safe and secure one for spectators.&#8217;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Among the first Olympic champions to react was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/adam-peaty-this-is-a-matter-of-life-or-death-and-welcomes-clarity-of-tokyo-2020-postponement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Britain&#8217;s Adam Peaty<\/strong><\/a>, who is aiming to defend the 100m breaststroke crown, now at Tokyo 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Five-time Olympic champion <strong>Katie Ledecky<\/strong> and London 2012 100m breaststroke gold medallist<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/cameron-van-der-burgh-goes-viral-on-his-coronavirus-covid-19-struggle\/\"><strong> Cameron van der Burgh<\/strong> &#8211; It was also agreed that the Games will keep the name Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Postponement of the Games was announced following an Executive Board meeting and a conference call between Prime Minister Abe and Bach earlier today.<\/p>\n<h2>The Tokyo 2021 Statement In Full:<\/h2>\n<blockquote>\n<h5>&#8220;THE PRESIDENT OF THE INTERNATIONAL OLYMPIC COMMITTEE (IOC), THOMAS BACH, AND THE PRIME MINISTER OF JAPAN, ABE SHINZO, HELD A CONFERENCE CALL THIS MORNING TO DISCUSS THE CONSTANTLY CHANGING ENVIRONMENT WITH REGARD TO COVID-19 AND THE OLYMPIC GAMES TOKYO 2020.<\/h5>\n<p>&#8220;They were joined by Mori Yoshiro, the President of the Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee; the Olympic Minister, Hashimoto Seiko; the Governor of Tokyo, Koike Yuriko; the Chair of the IOC Coordination Commission, John Coates; IOC Director General Christophe De Kepper; and the IOC Olympic Games Executive Director, Christophe Dubi.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;President Bach and Prime Minister Abe expressed their shared concern about the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic, and what it is doing to people\u2019s lives and the significant impact it is having on global athletes\u2019 preparations for the Games.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In a very friendly and constructive meeting, the two leaders praised the work of the Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee and noted the great progress being made in Japan to fight against COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The unprecedented and unpredictable spread of the outbreak has seen the situation in the rest of the world deteriorating. Yesterday, the Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said that the COVID-19 pandemic is &#8220;accelerating&#8221;. Now we expect everyone to mobilize to continue training.\u00a0Do not give up.\u00a0I hope that by the next year we will be able to prepare well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rtejustify\">&#8220;There is a lot of work ahead to review the calendar of competitions for this and subsequent years. All international and national federations will be engaged in this task.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/wada-bans-russia-not-russians-from-international-sport-for-4-years\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Russian Federation was notably banned from international competition in December<\/a>, which feels like a lifetime ago. But with the decision being sent to an appeal, the Russians will still be allowed to compete under their flag for the time being.<\/p>\n<p>The World Anti-Doping Agency, which has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/wada-addresses-athlete-questions-about-testing-during-coronavirus-pandemic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">altering its practices in recent weeks<\/a> to accommodate new regulations around the coronavirus outbreak, also voiced its support for postponement.\u00a0 From WADA President <strong>Witold Banka<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;The health and safety of the athletes remains the number-one priority for WADA and the anti-doping community, and it is clear that the correct decision has been taken in this challenging and unprecedented situation. As we all come to terms with the impact of this pandemic, it is clear that there are a number of challenges being faced related to the testing of athletes at this time. We will continue to monitor that situation to mitigate the effect of any interruptions to the program.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>The Athlete Voice<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/adam-peaty-this-is-a-matter-of-life-or-death-and-welcomes-clarity-of-tokyo-2020-postponement\/\">Olympic 100m breaststroke champion Peaty released a statement<\/a> saying that while disappointed as an athlete, he fully supported the decision as &#8220;it is a matter of life and death&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Ledecky, who has a haul of six medals from two Olympics, posted on social media, saying:<\/p>\n<div class=\"oembed-wrap\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">As we stand together to meet today\u2019s challenges, we can dream about a wonderful Olympics in a beautiful country.
