{"id":424106,"date":"2020-03-23T15:52:25","date_gmt":"2020-03-23T22:52:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=424106"},"modified":"2024-10-28T12:02:15","modified_gmt":"2024-10-28T19:02:15","slug":"portugal-joins-chorus-of-rapid-postponement-of-tokyo-2020-for-athletes-sake","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/portugal-joins-chorus-of-rapid-postponement-of-tokyo-2020-for-athletes-sake\/","title":{"rendered":"Portugal Joins Chorus Of &#8216;Rapid Postponement Of Tokyo 2020 For Athletes&#8217; Sake&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The Portuguese Olympic Committee (COP)<\/strong>\u00a0and the nation&#8217;s <strong>Athletes Commission<\/strong> today joined the chorus of &#8220;Postpone Tokyo 202o Olympics for the sake of athletes&#8221; when it sent a letter to the <strong>president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Thomas Bach,<\/strong> requesting that \u201che quickly announce to the world a postponement solution that reassures athletes and sports organizations\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>That said the COP, would allow the Olympic Games to be held &#8220;in peace and security for all.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, the COP notes that the IOC asked athletes last week, after the meeting with the International Federations, to continue their preparations with a view to participating in the Olympic Games.<\/p>\n<p>In the letter sent to Thomas Bach, the COP argues that this request<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201c &#8230; carries a high risk and involves unequivocal pressure on athletes, at a time when the general guidelines of the global health authorities insist on the importance of people staying at home, which has resulted in the closure of all training centres. \u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The COP adds:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;This attitude of the IOC has wider consequences that can affect the image and reputation of the Olympic Movement. In this sense, the need to not &#8216;put the health and lives of athletes in question in this battle that we must fight together&#8217; &#8230; is reaffirmed. Today, more than ever in our recent history, firm decisions are required. \u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The COP notes that &#8220;a legal framework has been found in Portugal that allows the activity of athletes in particular conditions&#8221;. However, it adds:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8221; &#8230; access to training centres, although permitted, in practice is not easy, due to the multiplicity of entities managing these spaces, both municipalities and private, which are unable to ensure this operation without putting their employees at risk. \u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It says that &#8220;inequality in training conditions will always be a difficult problem to resolve&#8221;, adding in its letter to Bach:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are sports that, due to their training conditions, involve high levels of risk exposure, and it is not possible to find safe training solutions, according to the guidelines of health authorities, which further accentuates competitive imbalances. and preparation of athletes generated by this unprecedented situation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>Portuguese Athletes Request Postponement of Tokyo 2020<\/h2>\n<p>The COP sent its letter on the same day that the Olympic Athletes Commission (CAO) informed the <strong>International Olympic Committee&#8217;s Athletes Commission<\/strong> that the majority of Portuguese athletes wants the Games, due to start on July 24, postponed.<\/p>\n<p>Of 74 elite athletes who answered a poll, 89% wanted to postpone the Games, and two-thirds of those want the big event moved to 2021. In addition, 82% of the athletes felt it would be &#8220;unfair&#8221; to go ahead with a July Olympic Games this year, with only 42% suggesting that they had at least the minimum requirements to fulfil their training.<\/p>\n<p><em>And in Portuguese:<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>COP PEDE A THOMAS BACH RAPIDEZ NO AN\u00daNCIO DO ADIAMENTO<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>O Comit\u00e9 Ol\u00edmpico de Portugal (COP) enviou esta segunda-feira uma carta ao Presidente do Comit\u00e9 Ol\u00edmpico Internacional (COI), Thomas Bach, a solicitar que \u201crapidamente possa anunciar ao mundo uma solu\u00e7\u00e3o de adiamento que tranquilize os atletas e as organiza\u00e7\u00f5es desportivas\u201d, permitindo a realiza\u00e7\u00e3o dos Jogos Ol\u00edmpicos \u201cem paz e seguran\u00e7a para todos.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Na semana passada, o COI pediu aos atletas, ap\u00f3s a reuni\u00e3o com as Federa\u00e7\u00f5es Internacionais, para que continuassem a fazer a sua prepara\u00e7\u00e3o tendo em vista a participa\u00e7\u00e3o nos Jogos Ol\u00edmpicos. Na carta enviada a Thomas Bach, o COP defende que esta solicita\u00e7\u00e3o \u201ccomporta um risco elevado e envolve uma inequ\u00edvoca press\u00e3o sobre os atletas, num momento em que as orienta\u00e7\u00f5es generalizadas das autoridades de sa\u00fade mundiais insistem para a import\u00e2ncia das pessoas ficarem em casa, resultando assim no fecho de todos os centros de treino.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Esta atitude do COI, defende o COP, tem consequ\u00eancias mais alargadas que podem afetar a imagem e reputa\u00e7\u00e3o do Movimento Ol\u00edmpico. Nesse sentido, reafirma-se a necessidade de n\u00e3o \u201ccolocar a sa\u00fade e as vidas dos atletas em causa nesta batalha que devemos travar juntos e no mesmo sentido. Hoje, mais do que nunca na nossa hist\u00f3ria recente, imp\u00f5em-se decis\u00f5es firmes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>O COP explica ter sido encontrado em Portugal um quadro legal que permite a atividade dos atletas em condi\u00e7\u00f5es particulares, mas \u201co acesso aos centros de treino, ainda que permitido, na pr\u00e1tica n\u00e3o se torna f\u00e1cil, devido \u00e0 multiplicidade de entidades gestoras destes espa\u00e7os, quer munic\u00edpios, quer privados, que n\u00e3o t\u00eam condi\u00e7\u00f5es para assegurar esse funcionamento sem p\u00f4r em risco os seus colaboradores.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Para al\u00e9m disso, a desigualdade nas condi\u00e7\u00f5es de treino ser\u00e1 sempre um problema de dif\u00edcil resolu\u00e7\u00e3o. \u201cH\u00e1 modalidades desportivas que, por for\u00e7a das suas condi\u00e7\u00f5es de treino, envolvem elevados n\u00edveis de exposi\u00e7\u00e3o ao risco, n\u00e3o sendo poss\u00edvel encontrar solu\u00e7\u00f5es de treino em seguran\u00e7a, de acordo com as orienta\u00e7\u00f5es das autoridades de sa\u00fade, o que acentua ainda mais os desequil\u00edbrios competitivos e de prepara\u00e7\u00e3o de atletas gerados por esta situa\u00e7\u00e3o sem precedentes\u201d, pode ler-se na carta enviada pelo COP a Thomas Bach.<\/p>\n<p><strong>COMISS\u00c3O DE ATLETAS PEDE ADIAMENTO DOS JOGOS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A Comiss\u00e3o de Atletas Ol\u00edmpicos (CAO) informou a Comiss\u00e3o de Atletas do Comit\u00e9 Ol\u00edmpico Internacional que a maioria dos atletas portugueses integrados no Projeto T\u00f3quio 2020 defende o adiamento dos Jogos Ol\u00edmpicos.<\/p>\n<p>Esta iniciativa surgiu no seguimento do que t\u00eam sido os \u00faltimos desenvolvimentos relativos ao cen\u00e1rio de adiamento da realiza\u00e7\u00e3o dos Jogos Ol\u00edmpicos T\u00f3quio 2020 nas datas inicialmente previstas e da ausculta\u00e7\u00e3o que a CAO entendeu, nesse \u00e2mbito, dever fazer junto dos atletas atualmente integrados no Projeto T\u00f3quio 2020, estivessem ou n\u00e3o j\u00e1 qualificados.<\/p>\n<p>Nesse sentido, a CAO elaborou um question\u00e1rio, que foi enviado a 89 atletas, tendo respondido 74, ou seja, 83% dos atletas que est\u00e3o integrados no Projeto T\u00f3quio 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Destes, 89% s\u00e3o da opini\u00e3o de que os JO deveriam ser adiados, com cerca de dois ter\u00e7os a advogar o adiamento para 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Por outro lado, 82% dos atletas consideram que, a manterem-se as datas atuais, os Jogos Ol\u00edmpicos n\u00e3o seriam justos do ponto de vista desportivo.<\/p>\n<p>Finalmente, apenas 42% considera ter as condi\u00e7\u00f5es m\u00ednimas para treinar, embora sem a exig\u00eancia que a prepara\u00e7\u00e3o Ol\u00edmpica obriga.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Portuguese Olympic Committee (COP)\u00a0and the nation&#8217;s Athletes Commission today joined the chorus of &#8220;Postpone Tokyo 202o Olympics for the sake of athletes&#8221;
