WESTWOOD, Calif., October 13. AFTER a heart-breaking four-overtime loss to Pepperdine on Saturday at the Bruins' Sunset Canyon Rec Center Pool, UCLA's second-ranked men's water polo team rebounded with a decisive 9-3 victory over seventh-ranked Loyola Marymount's Lions hee this afternoon.<\/p>\n
With the win, UCLA improves to 8-4 on the season, while the Lions fall to 8-10.<\/p>\n
Both teams got off to a slow start and UCLA sophomore driver Brett Ormsby scored the only goal of the first-quarter. Ormsby had the opportunity to add another goal to the Bruin tally with a penalty shot at the 1:47 mark of the quarter, but Lion goalkeeper Kevin Paulsen came up with a save to keep it out of the net.<\/p>\n
The second period saw more offense with Bruin sophomore driver Peter Belden finding the back of the net less than a minute into the quarter. Then junior Nick Pacelli scored his first of the season at the 1:54 mark. <\/p>\n
However, the Lions joined the scoring with an extra-man Ryan Chapatte goal 1:29 before the half.<\/p>\n
Leading 3-1 coming out of halftime, the Bruins built on their lead with four unanswered goals in the third period for a 7-1 advantage heading into the fourth period. Sophomore center Ted Peck scored both of his goals in the period. Over the course of the weekend, UCLA out-scored its opponents 7-0 in the third quarter.<\/p>\n
The fourth quarter was the most productive for the Lions with two goals, but it was not enough to overcome their six-point deficit. The fourth also
\nbrought out many new faces for the Bruins as sophomore goalkeeper Joe Axelrad saw his first minutes of the season.<\/p>\n
Coming in halfway through the period, Axelrad posted a save, while allowing a goal. Redshirt freshman David Pietsch also saw his first minutes of the season and scored with 1:43 remaining on his only shot the season.<\/p>\n
The Bruins will head north next weekend for a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at California at 10:30 a.m. Saturday morning, preceding the football against their northern cousins later that afternoon at
\nStrawberry Canyon.<\/p>\n
On Sunday, UCLA will have its first meeting of the season with top-ranked and defending NCAA champ Stanford in a non-conference match.<\/p>\n
LMU, located on the westside of Los Angeles in the suburb of Westchester, just minutes from LAX, will serve as the host site for this year's NCAA DI men's polo championships, slated for Dec. 7-8. It will mark the first time Loyla Marymount has hosted an NCAA Championship although its basketball arena — Gerstsen Pavilion — served as host site for the wrestling
