{"id":422113,"date":"2020-03-12T05:30:33","date_gmt":"2020-03-12T12:30:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=422113"},"modified":"2020-03-12T10:03:12","modified_gmt":"2020-03-12T17:03:12","slug":"peaty-anderson-co-set-for-edinburgh-against-the-backdrop-of-coronavirus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/peaty-anderson-co-set-for-edinburgh-against-the-backdrop-of-coronavirus\/","title":{"rendered":"Peaty, Anderson &#038; Co Set For Edinburgh Against The Backdrop Of Coronavirus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sporting events around the world are being cancelled in the wake of the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) but the <strong>Edinburgh International Swim Meet<\/strong> featuring <strong>Adam Peaty<\/strong>, <strong>Duncan Scott <\/strong>and <strong>Freya Anderson<\/strong>\u00a0is going ahead this weekend.<\/p>\n<p>Entry lists for Edinburgh include swimmers who would travel from overseas including <strong>Jeanette Ottesen<\/strong>, of Denmark, <strong>Fanny Lecluyse<\/strong> from Belgium and <strong>Jan Micka<\/strong> of the Czech Republic.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/scandinavian-swimming-shutdown-danish-open-olympic-trials-swim-open-stockholm-off-norway-bans-all-sport-events-in-coronavirus-lockdown\/\">The Danish Olympic trials have been postponed along with China and Italy as has the Swedish Open<\/a> while the South American Championships have been cancelled.<\/p>\n<p>Ben Higson, the Swim Ireland senior team head coach, announced on social media that the squad &#8211; due to include former world junior 100m breaststroke champion <strong>Mona McSharry<\/strong> &#8211; would not travel, saying:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BenHigson1\/status\/1238125996215349252\">https:\/\/twitter.com\/BenHigson1\/status\/1238125996215349252<\/a><\/p>\n<p>So too has Peaty posted on Twitter, saying:<\/p>\n<div class=\"oembed-wrap\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Please read for the upcoming Edinburgh International Meet &#8211; hope you all have great races \ud83d\ude4f\ud83c\udffc <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/17rX3Q8QK0\">pic.twitter.com\/17rX3Q8QK0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Adam Peaty OBE (@adam_peaty) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/adam_peaty\/status\/1238105030999396352?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 12, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p>FINA has announced \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/fina-cancels-postpones-swathe-of-aquatic-events-due-to-coronavirus-pandemic-some-decisions-pending\/\">a swathe of cancellations\u00a0and postponements today<\/a> after a task force was formed following their proposal to impose a three-month moratorium on all aquatic events, including Olympic test events.<\/p>\n<p>The NBA season has been suspended, some Champions League football matches are being played behind closed doors while La Liga in Spain has been suspended for two weeks and all sports events in Norway are off.<\/p>\n<p>The Edinburgh meet, which is being held at the Royal Commonwealth Pool, would ordinarily mark another racing opportunity ahead of the British Olympic trials in April and beyond to Tokyo 2020.<\/p>\n<p>However, the Games are increasingly under threat and on Wednesday the World Health Organisation announced it will soon announce its \u201cbasic thoughts\u201d about whether they can proceed in July.<\/p>\n<p>Against this backdrop, one wonders how Tokyo hopefuls worldwide approach training given the Games may well not happen.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Arno Kamminga<\/strong> is having a season that has rocketed him to the upper echelons of men\u2019s breaststroke, going third all-time over 100m and second European in history in the 200m.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/arno-kamminga-on-insane-breaststroke-double-in-antwerp-training-for-an-under-threat-olympics\/\">Swimming World spoke to the Netherlands swimmer<\/a> on Wednesday and he said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI try not to think about it. If it happens, it happens \u2013 like everything happens for a reason but I know I have to swim fast this summer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is all I want to think about, that is what the plan is, what I am preparing for and if it doesn\u2019t happen, it doesn\u2019t happen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know I can swim fast and I know I can switch fast if I have to.
