It\u2019s 19.17, his goal time in the 50 free.<\/p>\n<p>That was the point off in the distance that the State College sprinter aimed for. The hurdle over which he had to leap to get there was just as obvious, so burned into his brain that it didn\u2019t require a marker to ink it: 19.29, the national public high school record set by <strong>Caeleb Dressel.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Wednesday night, at the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Championships, Brownstead accomplished a goal \u2026 and then some.<\/p>\n<p>Brownstead downed Dressel\u2019s record, winning the Class 3A race at Bucknell University in 19.24 seconds. Though he didn\u2019t hit his goal time, he did something arguably more impressive: On the Lions\u2019 200 free relay, which finished fourth, Brownstead split a ridiculous time of 18.67 seconds on the anchor leg.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">? national record alert ?<br \/>\nMatt Brownstead of State College goes 19.24 to win the 50 free.<br \/>\nCaeleb Dressel held the old mark at 19.29 <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SwimmingWorld?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@SwimmingWorld<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/rx4uK4yYrk\">pic.twitter.com\/rx4uK4yYrk<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Matthew De George (@sportsdoctormd) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/sportsdoctormd\/status\/1237858825362759684?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 11, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt certainly an outstanding feeling,\u201d Brownstead told Swimming World. \u201cIt\u2019s kind of mind-boggling to think that I\u2019m anywhere near what he (Dressel) goes because he\u2019s the best swimmer in the world. But it feels really good to be here with my team cheering for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brownstead defended his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.piaa.org\/sports\/championship_details.aspx?sport=swimming\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PIAA title in the event<\/a>, last year setting the state record at 19.55. His reaction after looking at the board was one of elation, with a little surprise mixed in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had been thinking about that. It\u2019s a little bit of surprise, a little bit of excitement,\u201d Brownstead said. \u201cBut when I saw it, I was mostly excited because last year was kind of the same thing when I broke the state record, that this was what I want to go and I know I have the potential to do it, but I want to see if I can.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pennington School&#8217;s<strong> David Curtiss <\/strong>still owns the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/david-curtiss-goes-19-42-sets-national-prep-record-in-50-free-video\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Independent School record<\/a> at 19.42 set last month.<\/p>\n<p>Brownstead now ranks fifth all-time in the 50 free in boys&#8217; 17-18 history:<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0Caeleb Dressel &#8211; 18.67<br \/>\n2. Ryan Hoffer &#8211; 18.71<br \/>\n3. Michael Andrew &#8211; 18.88<br \/>\n<em><strong>4.\u00a0Matt Brownstead\u00a0&#8211; 19.24<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\n5. Drew Kibler -19.35<\/p>\n<p>Brownstead has been an under-the-radar sprint star for a while, swimming at a smaller club in Nittany Lion Aquatic. His stock grew rapidly last year at the World Junior Championships, and he\u2019s committed to join what appears to be a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/quickly-improving-matt-brownstead-verbals-to-virginia-for-2020-21\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">building men\u2019s program at the University of Virginia<\/a>, powered by a burgeoning sprint contingent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s super exciting,\u201d Brownstead said. \u201cTo know that the first years now and my class going in is just so strong, and all the people there right now that were at ACCs, it\u2019s just an outstanding team. And to know that we have the potential to do really big things there, it\u2019s super exciting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>State College coach <strong>Andrew Morrison<\/strong> said that Brownstead\u2019s focus has redoubled since World Juniors in Budapest, and days like Wednesday are an indication of what he\u2019s capable of.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s most telling that Brownstead\u2019s grin widened when he discussed his relay split. He brought home the squad, which includes his brother John, in an 18.67, an otherworldly split. For a catch as the 19.24 might be, the relay swim holds just as fond a place in his heart.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s been wanting to be captain for a while,\u201d Morrison said. \u201cNow he has that chance and he\u2019s doing everything that he\u2019s supposed to do as a captain. He\u2019s driving the team., he\u2019s setting us up for success. That\u2019s how Matt is. He\u2019s not an internal guy about that. He wants to see the team do well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat makes me really happy,\u201d Brownstead said. \u201cThat\u2019s been a goal for a while too. And getting to do it with my team on the relay is always awesome.
