The 2020 New York Federation Boys Swimming and Diving Championships took place on March 7 at the Nassau County Aquatic Center in East Meadow, N.Y.<\/p>\n

Garden City’s\u00a0Jake Newmark\u00a0<\/strong>set a new meet, NYSPHSAA, and New York Federation record in the 200 free with a time of 1:35.88. Saint Anthony also broke NYSPHSAA marks in the 4×50 free relay (1:24.33) and 4×100 free relay (3:05.88).<\/p>\n

    Pittsford’s\u00a0Aaron Kusch\u00a0<\/strong>(24.87),\u00a0Jacob Novozhenets\u00a0<\/strong>(27.04),\u00a0Neil Mortimer\u00a0<\/strong>(22.26), and Liam Murphy\u00a0<\/strong>(20.19) began the meet by winning the opening 4×50 medley relay in 1:34.36. Xavier was right behind in 1:34.52 for second place while Brooklyn Technical took third in 1:35.37.<\/p>\n

    Newmark, who has committed to Wisconsin<\/a>, dominated the 200 free to defend his title. The senior won in 1:35.88, breaking the previous meet and NY Federation record of 1:36.19. Saint Anthony\u2019s William Swartwout\u00a0<\/strong>also broke the 1:40 barrier in 1:38.93 for second while Comsewogue\u2019s Jake Vecchio\u00a0<\/strong>placed third in 1:41.70.<\/p>\n

    After earning the silver in the 200 IM last year, Great Neck South\u2019s\u00a0Justin Whang\u00a0<\/strong>grabbed the gold this season after winning the event in a final time of 1:51.12. The runner-up spot went to Miller Place’s\u00a0Henry Shemet\u00a0<\/strong>in 1:51.75 while Dansville’s\u00a0Aidan Kreiley\u00a0<\/strong>secured bronze in 1:52.01.<\/p>\n

    Saint Francis Prep’s\u00a0Sandon Karinsky\u00a0<\/strong>splashed-and-dashed his way to the state title in the 50 free, clocking in at a quick 20.81. Right behind him was Sewanhaka’s\u00a0Jake Ang\u00a0<\/strong>in second with a time of 20.91 followed closely by\u00a0TJ Bearor\u00a0<\/strong>of Queensbury in 20.99.<\/p>\n

    Bloomfield\u2019s\u00a0Alex Kenyon\u00a0<\/strong>dove to first on the 1-meter board for the second year in a row, finishing with a final score of 515.45 for the win. Peekskill\u2019s\u00a0Ioannais Schattman\u00a0<\/strong>placed second with a total of 510.20 points while Fox Lane\u2019s\u00a0Reid Gerken\u00a0<\/strong>took third with a score of 504.40.<\/p>\n

    Albany Academy’s\u00a0Bryce Henkel\u00a0<\/strong>flew to the top of the podium in the 100 fly, touching the wall in 49.43 as the first of five swimmers to crack the 50-second barrier in what proved to be a tight race. Saint Francis Prep’s\u00a0Sandon Karinsky\u00a0<\/strong>(49.47) and Comsewogue’s\u00a0Jake Vecchio\u00a0<\/strong>(49.51) completed the top three.<\/p>\n

    Chaminade’s\u00a0Nicholas Shopis\u00a0<\/strong>sprinted to the gold medal in the 100 free, stopping the clock in a swift 45.45 to win by over a half-second. Chenango Valley’s\u00a0Eli Lan Fear\u00a0<\/strong>was the runner-up with a time of 46.02 while Watertown’s Nathaniel Carlos\u00a0<\/strong>finished third in 46.06.<\/p>\n

    Newmark added the 500 free gold medal to his hardware collection after also claiming the 200 free win, powering home in 4:23.24 to win the event for the second-straight year. Second place went to Murphy\u00a0<\/strong>in 4:29.27 while Our Lade of Lourdes\u2019 Michael Faughnan <\/strong>took third in 4:30.32.<\/p>\n

    Saint Anthony’s\u00a0Christopher Stange\u00a0<\/strong>(21.27),\u00a0Mark Owens\u00a0<\/strong>(20.94),\u00a0Matthew McManus\u00a0<\/strong>(21.68), and\u00a0Swartwout (20.44) joined forces to win the 4×50 free relay in 1:24.33, taking down the previous NYSPHSAA record of 1:24.54 set in 2010. Chaminade was second in 1:25.12 and Fordham Prep was third in 1:26.45.<\/p>\n

    Swartwout powered home to a win in the 100 back, cruising to the wall in a final time of 50.27 for the state title. Monroe Woodbury’s\u00a0Liam Allen\u00a0<\/strong>took second in 50.76 as Rondout Valley’s\u00a0Bryan Chorzempa\u00a0<\/strong>wound up in third place with a time of 50.90.<\/p>\n

    Dansville\u2019s\u00a0Aidan Kreiley<\/strong>, who is headed to Louisville this fall<\/a>, won the 100 breast by over a full second with an official time of 55.03. Baldwinsville’s\u00a0Nicholas Schultz\u00a0<\/strong>(56.14) and Fordham Prep’s\u00a0Jack Kelly\u00a0<\/strong>(56.35) finished second and third, respectively.<\/p>\n

    Saint Anthony’s Stange (46.64), Owens (46.66), McManus (47.71), and Swartwout (44.87) concluded the meet with a bang as they won the 4×100 free relay in 3:05.88, breaking the NYSPHSAA record of 3:06.61 set in 2018.
