{"id":421424,"date":"2020-03-08T00:15:49","date_gmt":"2020-03-08T07:15:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=421424"},"modified":"2020-03-08T12:01:29","modified_gmt":"2020-03-08T19:01:29","slug":"coach-denis-cotterell-quits-chinese-swimming-will-not-support-sun-yangs-last-appeal-against-eight-year-ban","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/coach-denis-cotterell-quits-chinese-swimming-will-not-support-sun-yangs-last-appeal-against-eight-year-ban\/","title":{"rendered":"Coach Denis Cotterell Quits Chinese Swimming &#038; Will Not Support Sun Yang&#8217;s Last Appeal Against Eight-Year Ban"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Denis Cotterell, Sun Yang&#8217;s Australian coach,<\/strong> has quit Chinese swimming and will not support the swimmer&#8217;s further appeal to the <strong>Swiss Federal Tribunal<\/strong> against the eight-year ban imposed on him by the<strong> World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA)<\/strong>\u00a0after a <strong>Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS)<\/strong> hearing.<\/p>\n<p>Sun&#8217;s swimming career came to a thudding halt on Friday February 28 when the CAS declared in favour of WADA against Sun and his backers at FINA, the international swimming federation whose Doping Panel outlined the excoriating details of an acrimonious anti-doping mission to the swimmer&#8217;s home in September 2018 but concluded that a caution was enough. WADA begged to differ, pressed for a charge of tampering and won the argument,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/sun-yang-cas-report-in-full-athlete-actions-wholly-inappropriate-idtm-testing-exonerated\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> the full report of which was released last Wednesday<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Since then,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/sun-yang-sprayed-by-social-media-criticism-as-fans-turn-on-their-fallen-star-say-sorry-to-mack-horton\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Chinese fans have started to turn on Sun<\/a>. Now\u00a0Cotterell has severed ties and says he will not support Sun&#8217;s last appeal.<\/p>\n<div class=\"widget widget-ad \">\n<div class=\"advert\" data-module=\"article.ad\" data-ad-type=\"MEDIUM\" data-loc=\"MOBILE\" data-max-width=\"727\" data-sticky-class=\"\" data-sticky-offset=\"0\" data-sticky-padding-top=\"0\" data-sticky-padding-bottom=\"0\">&#8220;I have terminated my contract with (the) Chinese Swimming Association,&#8221; <a title=\"Cotterell told The Sunday Telegraph\" href=\"http:\/\/ib.adnxs.com\/seg?add=1&amp;redir=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.dailytelegraph.com.au%2Fsport%2Folympics%2Faussie-swim-coach-denis-cotterell-cuts-ties-with-sun-yang-in-wake-of-ban%2Fnews-story%2F3278a27a0219d0c6f901dd47c59bc4e4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cotterell told t<em>he Australian Sunday Telegraph<\/em><\/a>.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Asked if he supported Yang&#8217;s appeal, Cotterell said: &#8220;No.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_402212\" style=\"width: 350px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-402212\" class=\" wp-image-402212\" src=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/SUNYANG1-700x500.jpeg\" alt=\"SUNYANG1\" width=\"340\" height=\"243\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-402212\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sun Yang and Dennis Cotterell prepare to enter the CAS hearing in Montreux, November, 2019 &#8211; Photo Courtesy: Craig Lord<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Cotterell, who supported Sun throughout his CAS hearing, has previously insisted that Sun was a clean swimmer, even saying that he was just as clean as his most famous Australian swimmer, Grant Hackett.<\/p>\n<p>He also defended Sun during last year&#8217;s FINA world championships, where the Chinese swimmer faced a podium protest after the 400m freestyle final by Australian 2016 Olympic champion Mack Horton, who refused to pose for photographs with Sun to reinforce his message that he did not feel a swimmer towing a doping record and in the midst of a second anti-doping adjudication process should have been allowed to race at the global showcase.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, Cotterell said of the 11-times World champion who at London 2012 became the first Chinese man ever to claim Olympic gold in the pool when he won the 400m:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I love working with an athlete who has paid their dues, has longevity and is still achieving.\u00a0If you think for a second I would be doing that with someone that is a cheat then people don&#8217;t know me. That is an insult.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Sun&#8217;s career is beyond repair, regardless of the outcome of his appeal, a part of which is aimed at returning him to the sport in time for the defence of the Olympic 200m freestyle at Tokyo 2020.
