It was the No. 1 time in the world this year and faster than her time that won the silver at Worlds last summer (2:06.95, though she went 2:05.96 in prelims in Gwanju). The meet record had stood to <strong>Cammile Adams<\/strong> at 2:06.76 since 2012.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/hali-flickinger-on-move-to-arizona-state-i-just-needed-a-change\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Flickinger&#8217;s effort follows a switch of programs<\/a> from <strong>Jack Bauerle<\/strong>&#8216;s University of Georgia to <strong>Bob Bowman<\/strong> at Arizona State that appears to working well for the &#8216;fly ace. I was the most physically prepared athlete in that race.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Today, Flickinger noted:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u00a0<\/em>\u201cI was hoping to be close to [Adams&#8217; time]. We\u2019re working on different things with Bob [Bowman], I\u2019m trying to learn how to swim my own race and not let other people effect the way I swim. I\u2019m really happy that I was able to control that race the way that I needed to, so yeah I\u2019m happy.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>On her last lap inside 32sec, she\u00a0said: \u201cI usually try to control the first 100 and a lot of these competitors don\u2019t, so it\u2019s kind of hard for me because I\u2019m not always the first out. It\u2019s really hard to tell myself that\u2019s okay. So usually the first part is controlled and then the last 100 is where I thrive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">Meanwhile, Smith broke the 17-18 National Age Group Record to finish second in 2:06.39. It\u2019s a Hong Kong record for Haughey, breaking her own mark.<\/p>\n<p>Third was <strong>Allison Schmitt<\/strong> in 53.80. It\u2019s the first time she\u2019s been under 54 since the 2016 Olympic Trials.<\/p>\n<p>The interest in the men\u2019s 100 free was split between the A and B finals. <strong>Zach Apple<\/strong> won the title in 48.59 with <strong>Tate Jackson<\/strong> second (48.72) and <strong>Dean Farris<\/strong> third (49.97). But <strong>Nathan Adrian<\/strong> won the B final in 48.62, with <strong>Caeleb Dressel<\/strong> second in 48.68 after both missed the A final with rough morning swims. Apple alluded to the state of training everyone is in when he noted:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe\u2019re definitely still in heavy training; Monday was a little lighter but the weeks coming up are no different than normal. I\u2019m feeling really good, I\u2019m really excited to get to this summer. She got past <strong>Molly Hannis<\/strong> (1:06.43) and <strong>Annie Lazor<\/strong> (1:06.54) after both beat her in the morning. Looking ahead to bigger moments this year, King said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI\u2019m feeling good. It\u2019s crazy to think that Trials and the Olympics are coming up already again. It seems like it\u2019s been such a long time and it also seems like it\u2019s flown by. I think that [100m breaststroke performance] was pretty good, I think especially for how heavy I\u2019ve been training recently. Bick<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Michael Andrew<\/strong> was still the only one to crack a minute in the men\u2019s 100 breast, following up his 59.83 in the morning with a 59.14 to win by more than a second. It\u2019s a season-best time for him. <strong>Kevin Cordes<\/strong> took second in 1:0045 with <strong>Nic Fink<\/strong> third (1:00.52) and <strong>Andrew Wilson<\/strong> fourth (1:00.64). Said Andrew on his speedy effort:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt was very good. It\u2019s nice racing these guys, I\u2019ve been racing them for so many years now, so I get comfortable racing them which is good. I knew it was a fast field and that I had to be on my A-game. I felt amazing this morning and just wanted to come back and give it everything. It was good\u2014 there were a few things that I could fix, I kind of got out of my head. But I think that 58[sec] is going to be an easy one to break so I\u2019m looking forward to getting there.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He had been watching <strong>Adam Peaty<\/strong> and learning:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI think right now, what\u2019s feeling best is the rhythm and the timing of the stroke. It\u2019s been really clean. We\u2019ve been working on a lot of things, watching Peaty&#8217;s stroke a lot. We\u2019ve been studying it and trying to figure out how do I maximize my body for all its worth in the pool and I think we\u2019re getting close to it.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The men\u2019s 200 fly was less eventful, with <strong>Gunnar Bentz<\/strong> going out fast and winning in 1:56.20, more than a second clear of <strong>Chase Kalisz<\/strong> (1:57.28). Third was <strong>Jay Litherland<\/strong> in 1:58.02.<\/p>\n<p>The women\u2019s 400 free is, as usual, the <strong>Katie Ledecky<\/strong> show. She won in 3:59.66, remaining one of only three women to ever break four minutes (with <strong>Ariarne Titmus<\/strong> and <strong>Federica Pellegrini<\/strong>). <strong>Leah Smith<\/strong> was second in 4:06.81. <strong>Melanie Margalis<\/strong> dropped 11 seconds from the morning to finish in 4:09.00 for third. Schmitt was fourth in 4:09.40. The swim was Ledecky&#8217;s 19th sub-4:00 performance, the next most being Titmus&#8217; four such swims. Said Ledecky:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI was happy with it. It was a good swim, I put it together well and my stroke felt good.\u00a0It\u2019s a really good field here in Iowa in every event, so it\u2019s good to get some good race prep here and I\u2019m excited to move forward with training after this.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Among readers of this report, Jim Gaughran,\u00a0Stanford swim coach 1960-1980, left a cheering comment for Ledecky:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;It\u2019s been so thrilling to watch, in person, or on t.v.
