Friends At FINA &#8220;Stole The Dreams&#8221; Of Swimmers &#038; Coaches Worldwide&#8217;: ASCTA"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"\">\n<div id=\":1vw\" class=\"ii gt\">\n<div id=\":1z4\" class=\"a3s aXjCH \">\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p>The <strong>Australian Swimming Coaches And Teachers Association<\/strong> (ASCTA) today accuses <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/sun-yang-vs-wada-verdict-damning-eight-year-ends-career-of-chinese-controversy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Sun Yang<\/strong>, the Chinese swimmer handed an eight-year ban by the World Anti-Doping Agency<\/a> last Friday, \u00a0and Swimming\u2019s world governing body FINA of \u201cstealing the dreams\u201d of swimmers and coaches worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>FINA must be held to account and its leadership must find a way to get back the two world titles claimed by Sun in Gwangju last year while awaiting a hearing into his case at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.<\/p>\n<p>ASCTA CEO <strong>Brendon Ward<\/strong>\u00a0issued a statement that bolstered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/take-fight-to-fina-get-macks-medal-back-aussie-coaches-tell-swimming-australia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">blistering comments from the organisation&#8217;s chair, <strong>Tony Shaw<\/strong><\/a>, to say:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cMack Horton has come out saying he is just a guy chasing a dream \u2013 well FINA and Sun Yang, they are the dream stealers of international sport \u2013 they have stolen Mack\u2019s dream and they have stolen the dreams of other athletes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;FINA must reconsider the decision handed down by WADA not to reverse Sun&#8217;s World Championship results and forget about the \u2018legal loop hole\u2019 they are talking about and do what is right by the athletes.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/sun-yang-verdict-ryan-cochrane-and-chad-le-clos-on-the-lasting-pain-of-loss\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shaw&#8217;s comments resonate with the feelings of athletes left nursing what might have been in fairer circumstances: the views of Ryan Cochrane and Chad Les Clos.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/sun-yang-verdict-ryan-cochrane-and-chad-le-clos-on-the-lasting-pain-of-loss\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <strong>Court of Arbitration for Sport<\/strong>, on grounds that Sun&#8217;s tampering case did not uncover any actual doping in the way that his positive test of 2014 did (explained here)<\/a>, ruled that the eight-year ban should start from Friday and that no retrospective action on results and medals should be taken<\/p>\n<p>However, ASCTA joined the loud chorus in the world swimming community calling for FINA to take away Sun&#8217;;s two gold medals from the 2019 World Championships in Gwangju last year.<\/p>\n<p>The key message in floods of social media posts, articles in mainstream media around the world, blogs, broadcasts and more is this: now that WADA and CAS had ruled against the FINA Doping Panel that sought to let Sun off with a caution but no penalty after a hearing into an acrimonious testing mission outside Sun&#8217;s home in 2018, FINA should put right what it got wrong.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of the CAS ruling, FINA has an obligation to acknowledge its errors, including letting Sun off with a caution and therefore allowing him to race on and compete at a World Championships held four months after WADA lodged its appeal at the CAS against the FINA Doping Panel decision the international federation had sought to keep a secret.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/sun-yangs-eight-year-ban-history-repeats-whiskey-in-the-jar-to-hammer-horror\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">report in the<em> Sunday Times<\/em> by this author in January 2019 revealed the details of Sun&#8217;s row<\/a> over four hours through the night in September 2018 and how, after removing from the chain of custody a blood sample submitted and signed off by Sun, the swimmers and his entourage were party to the smashing of a vial of blood on the pavement outside the control room.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_382391\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-382391\" data-attachment-id=\"382391\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/australian-coaches-back-mack-horton-call-on-fina-to-back-isl-zero-tolerance-on-doping\/mackhortonsunyanggabrieledetti\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/mackhortonsunyanggabrieledetti.jpg\" data-orig-size=\"800,532\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;PATRICK B. Kraemer<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In his statement, ASCTA CEO <strong>Brendon Ward<\/strong>\u00a0 added:\u00a0\u201cASCTA is an association that really feels for Craig and Mack; they deserve better; this is what they dream about and those dreams have not only been shattered but they have stolen those dreams.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #008080;\">\u201cFINA must be held to account for this. They have tried to fight this hearing and that was wrong and they must be held accountable for their actions; we have said all along we are for clean sport and that is absolutely what we stand for.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #008080;\">\u201cIt has to be open and transparent and it must be clean;
