The time broke\u00a0<strong>Jake Magahey&#8217;s\u00a0<\/strong>4:15 from last season as that was a historic swim in itself, lowering the oldest public school record at the time that was broken in the 80s by current Minnesota coach <strong>Jeff Kostoff<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Mitchell also broke his own state record in the 500 freestyle that he set last year at 4:16.72.<\/p>\n<p>Jake Mitchell has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/junior-national-finalist-jake-mitchell-of-carmel-swim-club-verbals-to-michigan-for-class-of-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">already committed to swim at the University of Michigan<\/a> where he will join the Wolverines as a freshman next season. Michigan has been known to be particularly deep in the 500 freestyle at the Big Ten and national level as Mitchell will join an undergrad training group next year with\u00a0<strong>Ricardo Vargas\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Patrick Callan<\/strong>, who were second and third at this week&#8217;s Big Ten championships.<\/p>\n<p>Mitchell&#8217;s swim puts him in the top 16 currently in Division I. He also was also a 1:34.05 in the 200 freestyle to just miss the state record held by former Carmel swimmer and current Texas standout <strong>Drew Kibler\u00a0<\/strong>(1:33.30). Mitchell also anchored Carmel&#8217;s state record in the 200 medley relay with a 20.19 as the team swam a 1:27.94.<\/p>\n<p>Mitchell currently swims for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teamunify.com\/Home.jsp?team=incsc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carmel Swim Club<\/a> under head coach\u00a0<strong>Chris Plumb<\/strong>. He swam at the 2019 World Juniors for the United States where he swam the third leg on the gold medal winning 4&#215;200 freestyle relay team.
