Catlin Gabel \u2013 78<br \/>\n2. Sweet Home \u2013 65<br \/>\n3. La Grande \u2013 49<br \/>\n4. Marist Catholic \u2013 21<br \/>\n4. Newport \u2013 19<\/p>\n<p>The meet began as Sweet Home&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Chloe Tyler\u00a0<\/strong>(27.79),\u00a0<strong>Malia Hewitt\u00a0<\/strong>(30.50), Hager<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>(25.38), and\u00a0<strong>Jamie Seward\u00a0<\/strong>(24.26) won the opening 4&#215;50 medley relay in a combined time of 1:47.93. Hager (23.82), Seward (25.04),\u00a0Hewitt (25.98), and Tyler (24.81) joined forces to win the 4&#215;50 free relay in 1:39.65, breaking their own Class 1-4A record of 1:40.25 set three years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly after helping her medley relay team to victory, Hager was back in the water to win the 200 free in 1:50.63. She was just off her prelims time of 1:50.29 which broke\u00a0<strong>Aly Viles&#8217;\u00a0<\/strong>2011 Class 1-4A record of 1:50.82. Tyler gave Sweet Home another victory by powering home in the 100 back in 58.63, taking down defending champion and current class record-holder Stadler (58.97).<\/p>\n<p>Carlson, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ucla-collects-four-2021-verbals-from-eva-carlson-ana-jih-schiff-kathryn-lundh-ashley-stenstrom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">who has verbally committed to UCLA<\/a>, successfully defended her state title in the 200 IM, winning the event by five seconds in a final time of 2:04.93 en route to breaking\u00a0<strong>Lauren Yon&#8217;s\u00a0<\/strong>Class 1-4A mark of 2:05.76 set in 2018. Carlson also won the 100 breast for the second-straight season, finishing in 1:03.12. Her time of 1:02.60 during prelims broke her own class record of 1:03.39 set two years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Cook won the 50 free for the second year in a row, splashing-and-dashing her way to a win in the 50 free in a swift 23.09. Her time crushed the previous Class 1-4A mark of 23.50 she set at this meet last season. Soon after, she was back in the water to win the 100 free in a quick 49.81 en route to breaking the previous class record of 50.67 she set during prelims (the old mark was held by Viles at 50.88 since 2011).<\/p>\n<p>Baker&#8217;s <strong>Brianna Stadler\u00a0<\/strong>flew to the top of the podium in the 100 fly, getting her hands to the wall in 58.99 as the only swimmer in the field to dip under the 60-second barrier. Bartlett dominated the 500 free, besting the field by 22 seconds in a final time of 4:58.58 to crack the five-minute barrier. Her time set a new class standard, taking down the previous mark of 4:59.12 set in 2015 by\u00a0<strong>Lucie Davis<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Catlin Gabel\u2019s<strong> Alyssa Sanchez\u00a0<\/strong>(55.66),\u00a0<strong>Defne Alpay\u00a0<\/strong>(57.94),\u00a0<strong>Greta Bogdanski\u00a0<\/strong>(55.93), and Cook (50.31) concluded the girls&#8217; meet by winning the 4&#215;100 free relay in a combined time of 3:39.84, eight seconds ahead of runner-up La Grande&#8217;s second-place showing of 3:47.19.<\/p>\n<h1>Boys Meet<\/h1>\n<h2>Top 5 Team Scores:<\/h2>\n<p>1. Newport \u2013 75<br \/>\n2. Madras \u2013 30<br \/>\n3. St. Mary&#8217;s \u2013 24<br \/>\n4. La Grande &#8211; 23<br \/>\n4. Cascade Christian \u2013 23<\/p>\n<p>Newport began their winning ways as Shanks<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>(24.23),\u00a0<strong>Luke Bachart\u00a0<\/strong>(29.60),\u00a0<strong>Toshio Toguchi\u00a0<\/strong>(26.37), and\u00a0<strong>Josh Malloy\u00a0<\/strong>(23.89) won the 4&#215;50 medley relay in a combined time of 1:44.09. <strong>Stephen Boys <\/strong>(24.85),\u00a0Toguchi (23.94),\u00a0<strong>Tristan Scarborough\u00a0<\/strong>(23.96), and Shanks (21.50) also won the 4&#215;50 free relay in 1:34.25.<\/p>\n<p>Soon after helping his medley relay team earn gold, Bachart was back in the pool to win the 200 free after he dropped three seconds from his prelims time to post a 1:45.64 during finals. He then went on to dominate the 500 free, winning the event by 12 seconds in 4:49.58 as the only athlete under the five-minute marker.<\/p>\n<p>Shanks sprinted to first place in the 100 free, finishing the race in a quick 47.75 as the first of only two swimmers in the field to crack the 50-second barrier. He also defended his state title in the 100 back, this time in record-setting fashion: his time of 51.09 broke the Class 1-4A record of 51.45 set by\u00a0<strong>Isaac Hewitt\u00a0<\/strong>in 2010.<\/p>\n<p>Catlin Gabel freshman\u00a0<strong>Akira Van de Groenedall\u00a0<\/strong>earned the first state title of his career after stopping the clock in 1:57.78 to win the 200 IM; Foord was right behind him in 1:57.89. Foord later won the 100 breast in 58.50 as the only one under a minute, besting the previous class record of 58.61 set by <strong>Tony Vickery\u00a0<\/strong>in 2011.<\/p>\n<p>North Valley&#8217;s <strong>Carson Washburn\u00a0<\/strong>sprinted to the top of the podium in the 50 free, getting his hand to the wall in a swift 22.64 to out-touch runner-up\u00a0<strong>Whyley Pierce\u00a0<\/strong>(22.76) of Kennedy. La Grande&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Glenn Ricker <\/strong>flew to the top spot in the 100 fly, getting his hands to the wall the quickest in 55.57 to edge out St. Mary&#8217;s <strong>Asa Frisbee<\/strong>, who also took second in the 200 free (1:47.07).<\/p>\n<p>Newport clinched their overall team title and completed the relay sweep as the quartet of Malloy (54.79), Toguchi (51.77), Scarborough (51.58), and Bachart (49.46) concluded the meet by winning the 4&#215;100 free relay in a combined time of 3:27.60, six seconds ahead of the field.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The 2020 Oregon 1-4A State Swimming Championships took place on Saturday, Feb. 22 at the Tualatin Aquatics Center in Beaverton, Ore.
