﻿{"id":416988,"date":"2020-02-17T09:44:58","date_gmt":"2020-02-17T16:44:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=416988"},"modified":"2020-02-20T09:45:22","modified_gmt":"2020-02-20T16:45:22","slug":"five-races-to-watch-at-the-2020-big-ten-womens-championships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/five-races-to-watch-at-the-2020-big-ten-womens-championships\/","title":{"rendered":"Five Races to Watch at the 2020 Big Ten Women\u2019s Championships"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"western\">The 2020 Big Ten Women&#8217;s Championships kick off this week at Iowa with a heavyweight battle expected between Michigan and Indiana, though Ohio State, Wisconsin, Northwestern and the rest of the field will have something to say about it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">The psych sheet has not officially been released, but there are plenty of anticipated races that will be exciting to watch at the Big Ten Women&#8217;s Championships this week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">Here is a look at five of them:<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">\u2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/results\/pdf\/2019-big-ten-womens-championships-full-results-ncaa-college-2019-02-23.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2019 Results<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/meet\/big-ten-swimming\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">More Big Ten coverage<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><strong>200 individual medley<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">Another race that could feature Wisconsin&#8217;s <strong>Beata Nelson<\/strong>, and another race that could be highly contested.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">Nelson&#8217;s 200 IM is perhaps her third best event as a backstroke specialist. She stunned the field by winning the 200 IM at the NCAA Championships last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">Meanwhile, Northwestern&#8217;s <strong>Calypso Sheridan<\/strong> is an IM specialist. While she is better in the 400 IM, the 200 IM is something she has improved upon greatly. She was an All-American in the 400 IM last year and has a shot at making the Australian Olympic team in the event.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">Ohio State&#8217;s <strong>Kathrin Demler<\/strong> is a butterfly specialist who also can put together an elite IM.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">Heading into the meet, Nelson is the top time in 1:52.77, while Demler (1:56.45), Sheridan (1:56.57), Indiana&#8217;s <strong>Cora Dupre<\/strong> (1:57.33), <strong>Mackenzie Looze<\/strong> (1:57.50) and Michigan&#8217;s <strong>Miranda Tucker<\/strong> (1:57.66) are all in a pack waiting to strike.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">This could be an underrated race at the Big Ten Women&#8217;s Championships with so many swimmers who have a chance to score at NCAAs.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_360177\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-360177\" data-attachment-id=\"360177\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/re-ranking-the-best-ncaa-womens-swimmers-in-division-i-from-1-25\/beata-nelson-swimmer-of-the-meet\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/beata-nelson-swimmer-of-the-meet-_PB54090-e1589479929674.jpg\" data-orig-size=\"1100,825\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;4&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;Peter H. Bick<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"western\"><strong>100 backstroke<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">Assuming they are both swimming the event, this could be a battle of the top two 100 backstroke swimmers in the NCAA \u2014 a prequel to the championships.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">Wisconsin&#8217;s <strong>Beata Nelson<\/strong> is the defending NCAA champion in the event and could go head-to-head with Michigan&#8217;s <strong>Maggie MacNeil<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">Nelson is the favorite, but you never know what could happen pre-taper. Bloomington, IN, Feb. 22, 2019\" width=\"700\" height=\"500\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-357771\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo Courtesy: Walt Middleton Photography 2019<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"western\"><strong>100 breaststroke<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">Michigan&#8217;s <strong>Miranda Tucker<\/strong> has been on the prowl this season, putting together some of the top breaststroke times in the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">This will be her first head-to-head challenge since the midseason invitationals, and it will be perhaps the most anticipated individual showdown of the Big Ten Women&#8217;s Championships.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">Along side her will be Minnesota&#8217;s <strong>Lindsey Kozeksly<\/strong>, who finished fourth at last year&#8217;s NCAA championships, three spots ahead of Tucker.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">Tucker has the top spot so far this season at 58.41, an NCAA \u201cA\u201d cut. She is looking to keep that momentum going this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">Her first big test will be at the Big Ten Women&#8217;s Championships, facing Michigan&#8217;s <strong>Sierra Schmidt<\/strong>. Schmidt finished sixth at last year&#8217;s NCAA Championships, but has been swimming at a faster pace this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">And Michigan&#8217;s<strong> Kaitlynn Sims<\/strong> has put together some strong distance events as well, so she can&#8217;t be counted out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">Schmidt has the best time heading into the meet at 15:49.90, while Sims is second at 15:51.06, both NCAA automatic qualifying times.
